Very few, if any, politicians stood trial, let alone being convicted, for their crimes. Even business tycoons don’t enjoy the immunity and impunity the politicians enjoy.
In the past 3 weeks we have had QAnon supporter blow up a street in Nashville and armed right-wing mobs invade the US Capitol building chanting that they want to kill the Vice-President.
… yet the discussion on twitter has switched to how Biden needs to appeal to these crazies and “unify” the country.

They have to be brought back into some mainstream common sense; you cannot imprison 22% of the electorate. Mind control is a far more efficient response. It should be make examples of the rioters and re-socialise the rest.

As often he makes as many daft points as really good ones. Tump was banned because his content was inciting violence and risking life, not to mention encouraging sedition, insurrection and a coup against a democratic election. I understand that he think Trump is better in the open, but we’ve had him in the open for four years, and he’s managed to completely fuck up the most powerful nation on Earth. There is no way he’d have been able to cause the havoc he has (including become the President) if he’d been banished to a fringe platform for lunatics.
Jonathan Pie has a bee in his bonnet about free speech, which is a fine thing to have a bee on your bonnet about. But people forget that the idea of ‘Free speech’ came about when you had to do the legwork of informing and educating yourself enough to reach a mass audience via established traditional media.
The idea of free speech is sound. But does anyone have the right to a mass audience? Do people have the right to have their free speech heard?
As always when people cry about the loss of free speech, when what they actually mean is their perceived right to be heard and listened to. And the right to be free of any consequences of their speech. Whether they are despotic president or end of pier racist comedians, that’s something they are always very keen on.

Who are these people calling/asking for unity? What is their vision of unity? I genuinely want to know.
I’m just a casual observer from half the world away. But to me what USA needs most at this moment is accountability. If a certain version of unity encroaches on accountability then that’s not unity at all; that’s submission and impunity.

I don’t think locking up 22% of the electorate is on the table. They should certainly be locking up anyone who thought it was appropriate to storm the capital with tie-wraps, military grade body armour, weaponry, CS Gas, Pipe bombs and stupid fucking horned helmet. There is no reasoning with these people. They are literally fucking insane.

I don’t recall saying arrest 22% of the electorate. I actually am not even familiar with that 22% number. Did you intend to reply to me or someone else?
Having said that, I’m fine with imprisoning anyone and everyone involved in treason/insurrection/or whatever anyone wants to call it. Sadly, people died and many more could easily have. (By the way, we have minorities in prison for much less and no one worries about helping integrate them).

I can see your point and it is a good one. I also understand his position in that with him in the open you present an opportunity to challenge him at every turn. To me this has been a large issue whereby his BS (and others; looking at you Farage, Gove, Johnsons, Rees-Mogg etc.) has essentially gone unchallenged.
@SBYM posted a really good article yesterday which argued that the truth is terribly poor at defending itself. And it has been. These people have been allowed to spout whatever bovine they want and get away with it. So you either cut them off and they disappear underground or you let them have a voice but actually be on top of them at every turn and reveal their BS. The latter is enormously difficult I agree.
Trump however, its easy. Just put him in jail but all those GOP weaklings that stood behind his lies also need to be exposed as the utterly shameless charlatans they are.
