Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

Speaking of human stupidity…

Some funny shit in the thread.

Watching a concert here on CNN, hosted by Tom Hanks at the Lincoln Memorial, kicked off with Springsteen, then loads of top artists have done songs, dotted from around the nation. All interspersed with little video clips.

The whole tenor is joyful, hopeful, celebratory. I feel like I felt back in the UK when I remember Blair, Prescott et al locking arms and singing ‘Things can only get better…’

OK, easy to be cynical about these things, but sod it. This is ace!

As for Trump, the irony is he was desperate for celebrities to show up so he could associate himself with all that pizzazz. I think he got (just about) the Dixie Chicks, some tractors, and a twirling baton from a game high schooler. Bless.

Biden isn’t trying to solicit celebrity. He’s a man on a mission. An old man on a mission, with a lot to do to shift some things from bad to better to good. Even so, many celebrities and stars seem keen to attach themselves to a new Presidency and a fresh start.

It all feels hopeful, sitting here watching.

The problem with Gone with the Winds is less of being offensive, but of being full-blown pseudohistory parroting the Lost Cause narrative.

Personally It will be interesting to see how Biden interacts with China, broad issues from trade to Taiwan and the south china sea eyc

Trump has proved that wildly baseless claims get traction simply by being the loudest voice in the room. I can see a continuation of that happening not just by himself but by the likes of Cruz and Hawley.

He will just say he was using them figuratively, as a kind of trope for non-Americans…but yeah…he is.

It will be a monumentally stupid move from Trump if he tries to create a new party, from a political perspective. Financial perspective, OTOH, is another matter.

According a CNN exit poll, about 20% of republican voters are worried about global warming etc. While his comments are aimed at the 80%, i think it could be a little early to be driving a wedge between you and 20% of your party’s support.

Ted Cruz?

Drive a wedge?

I remember we studied this at school. It all started with the citizens of Rio de Janeiro and then those meddlers from Kyoto got involved. Typical that Parisiens wanted to jump on the bandwagon. Who next, huh? Glaswegians? What would they know about global warming?
