Could one say his critical race is run?
Hurrah!!!
Critical race theory, I understand to mean to think deeply and reflect about how you view race and other cultures. Although in the USA it’ basic premise is all white people are racist in some way against black people, so have a good look at yourself and root it out. Stop saying things when talking to black people like, isn’t racism terrible? I’m glad I’m not a racist like my folk’s were even though they didn’t realise they were racist.
Yawn.
It was really important in America as there where and are racist laws where certain races had fewer rights than ‘white’ people. It is quoted as 3/4 citezenship for blacks and Chinese had what 1/4 citezenship? if that.
That the theory has progressed from that must be seen as a good thing, no?
Not at all. On it’s most basic level its about how divergent racial outcomes are influenced by systems and not just because individuals are racist.
Is it racist to demand that to vote a person needs a driver’s licence to provide proof of identity? On its surface that seems absurd. However, there are real racial differences in the obstacles that exist to obtain such an ID, and this sort of examination of how institutions can perpetuate racial bias even if no one upholding them is individually racist is the essence of CRT.
Racial differences in obstacles to obtaining a driver’s license? Examples please? I’m Genuinely interested to hear your reply.
I think it’s stupid requiring a driver’s licence to vote because my 80 year old white mother wouldn’t be able to produce one as she has never learnt to drive, ever. Would she come under critical race theory?
No, the experience of one white women being disadvantaged by a law does not negate an academic theory about the impacts of race.
For a state ID requirement to be racially agnostic there would have to be no difference in any aspect of what is required for a person to obtain one and how likely members of different groups were to otherwise need one. For loads of reasons, there are considerable inequities in this. In majority black neighborhoods, DMVs are less numerous, less well staffed and open for more limited hours. Residents of these neighborhoods own cars at a much lower degree meaning there is less additional value to going through the hassle and committing to the cost of getting one.
So, if you’re a member of a marginalized group and are told you have take time off work to pay for an ID you wont use for any other reason than to cast a vote that is going to be difficult to cast, then the racial impact of requiring a state ID to vote is pretty obvious.
Surely there are other documents that can be used as a proof of address such as utility bills, bank statements, rental contracts etc. Why does it only have to be a driver’s licence?
My “Right to arm bears” T-shirt is considered very funny over here. Was advised to take it off several times the year I bought it in the US. Some people have zero sense of humour when it comes to guns…….
Presume none of these people ever tried to buy alcohol under the age of 40 then.
Apparently a US passport costs about 150 dollars and there’s a thing called a passport card which only costs 30 dollars. Are these valid as proof of ID?
Photo?
My driving licence has a photo, my brittish one didn’t.
I’m into this passport card thing now. At 30 bucks that’s got to be the way to go.
Free ID cards are much better!
How long do they last (I presume 5 years, 10 year ones are much funnier particularly if you get one at 5 years old, at 15 you look completely different )
Passport cards were created to formalize ID requirements across borders that don’t require a full passport (think US-Mexico). They could be used to vote as it’s a legit state issued photo ID, but you still need to the other photo ID to use as evidence of identity to get one of these so dont solve the issue.
Free ID cards would be great
So that means you can’t get a passport without a drivers’ licence?
Not necessarily a driver’s licence, but a state issued ID card is more or less required for people who aren’t children. There is a pathway to obtained one without a valid photo ID, but it is not easy. Certainly it is easier to get a regular state issued ID card from your DMV than an ID card from the State Department.
Another example of systemic racism occurred in the last election, among the native American population. Many were excluded from voting due to living on a reservation. I can’t fully remember the details, but I vaguely remember there were new ID requirements, and they were not able to demonstrate their address, in the usual manner, as the addressing system is different on many reservations, so they were hitting a brick wall with being eligible to vote.
It prompted a lot of voting access workers to get out there on the reservations in the run up to the election, to try to tackle the problem and get more native Americans to vote.
It is not a problem I experience in my suburban American life.
We’ve driven through New Mexico / Four Corners / Mid West areas many times. Regardless of what happened originally when the white man turned up, giving them the shittest areas of the country to live in (given they originally lived in all of it) was and is one of the country’s biggest crimes IMHO.
