Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

my references were those who played POTUS, or a show about it.

Kevin Kline then. I loved Dave. Probably the closest to Zelensky’s backstory too.

The writer you are referring to actually wrote two of the 3 shows you’re referring to above.

probably why I liked them so much. Guessing Newsroom and West Wing were same writers?

Newsroom was fantastic, I was sad they didn’t continue it. but it probably hit too close to home.

There hasn’t been a credible Independent candidate for president since Roosevelt in 1912, and even that was unusual seeing has he was a former president who had fallen out with his party. Every other

Independents in our Presidential elections are generally vanity candidates who just use the platform to talk about things that are important to them. As they accept they’re not really in it to win it they are far more free to say things than a legit candidate would be. As for Congress, I think we only have 2 independents out of the 530 odd voting members across both chambers, and very few people would be able to say who the second one is without a google search.

Ross Perot?

As a credible candidate for President? No. He got attention, and an unusually high % of the vote (especially the first time), but was never credible in terms having a viable chance to win.

Absolutely wild story breaking over here in the last couple of days that I’m struggling to make sense of.

A small group of secret service agents, including those responsible for the security of the first lady, have been revealed to be taking unrecorded gifts, including free accommodation, from men impersonating other federal employees. These fake agents have now been arrested and the SS staff placed on leave.

The most wildly conspiracy focused explanation is part of a plan to get Trump back in the White House.

The third in line for the White House is the Speaker of the House. This is conventionally the leader in the house of the majority party, but it doesnt actually have to be a sitting house member. It can be anyone who receives majority support from the sitting house members. The theory is that the GOP take back the house in the midterms and appoint Trump speaker. They then use mole secret service agents to assassinate both Biden and then Harris (in short enough order than no new Vice is appointed), leaving Trump as the new President to see out the rest of Biden’s term.

I dnt buy that as a coherent strategy, but as we saw with Jan 6, there are enough people who cosplay at this shit swimming in the these conspiracy waters that someone of them will then act on their accord to try to fulfil these fantasies.

For anyone who’s interested , that fruitcake Marjorie Taylor Greene is being cross-examined now in a case brought to get her off the ballot in the mid-terms. The basis being that anyone aiding an insurrection cannot stand.

This is on the lowdown an astonishing piece of journalism that is an almost prefect distillation of how badly the press are failing us

All it does is launder bad faith talking points.

In talking about the challenges the Biden admin faced upon taking office, it says

Said differently, the label of socialism, the reality of rising crime, a clamor for open borders and demands for defunding the police almost cost Democrats the presidency. As a senator, Biden knew culture mattered. Whether his party has internalized any lessons, though, is doubtful.

Rising crime that occurred on the previous guy’s watch. No one is clamoring for open borders. “Defund” is exactly the same - something the party isnt pursuing but constantly has to defend itself against. Yet both authors in the sequence of this reporting (both the book, and the review of the book) just credulously report all of this as being Democratic party problems.

This is the bit about they state is written in service of “doing justice” to Sinema

Like Sarah Palin, she is fond of her own physique. The senator “boasted knowingly to colleagues and aides that her cleavage had an extraordinary persuasive effect on the uptight men of the GOP”.

All political reporting is in this country is soap opera palace intrigue nonsense and overly credulously reporting of on the records comments as being worthy of discussion when both the reporter and commenter know they are lies.
