I went on a quad bike trek with the “boys” in Canada years ago. Loads of beer and guns. I asked if we were hunting. “No, just for protection” was the answer. They never left their holsters. There’s stuff in the woods much smaller than bears that you really don’t want to take on hand to claws.
Of course that doesn’t quite apply to downtown Chicago.
No because there hasn’t always been 50 states. Passing an amendment actually requires 3/4 of the sates (10 of 13 originally). The 2/3 rule comes from what is required to official raise an amendment to be voted on.
But the bigger point is that the 2nd amendment, even with the current Heller interpretation on personal ownership, doesnt preclude restrictions. It is only raised as an objection to the idea the same way idiots raise the first amendment anytime personal (non-legal) consequences are suffered over their speech.
They’re blaming the doors now. It was too easy for the shooter to enter the building using a door. The common solution among this crowd now is to treat this issue by ensuring schools have only 1 door and one that can only be opened from the inside (does that mean you must always someone inside the building…like the guy who guards the grail?). When you listen to what these people think a school should look like it is essentially a max security federal prison. And the overlap between these people and the people complaining that forcing kids to wear masks in schools was doing permanent damage to their psyche is considerable.
Of course, even assuming that this isnt a totally insane approach to treating the problem, it ignores that you’re only addressing the “school” part of school shootings.
Apart from the complete insaneness of the suggestion, surely it is also a fire hazard to have only one door. Maybe the solution should be more out of the box… For example, a lot of children die from drowning… and so from the age of 3 there is a whole industry devoted to getting kids to swim and on to the associated sports/pleasure activities, Similarly, you could have all kids from the age of 3 to be trained in the handling, owning and shooting guns. There’s a whole slew of industries that’ll flourish. Smaller guns for smaller hands, a new subject for teachers to teach, body armour, better recruits for the police and army and of course… oh and also, the pine plantations…
Or we could shoot the kids who are drowning and not only does that improve the drowning kids statistics, but we reduce of pool of potential victims of school shootings, all while supporting the gun industry. Its a rare win-win-win.
I think, in the context of America, that line of discussion would lead nowhere. Hunting is still very popular and even many people who do not hunt would struggle to argue that people shouldn’t be allowed to do it. Also, as I live in Maine I’ll use that as an example, the north of the state - called the 2nd District - is “purple” in that it can be Democrat or Republican and hunting is extremely popular. Trying to introduce hunting bans (outside of seasonal restrictions which they already have) would be a guaranteed vote loser. I’m sure it is the same story across much of Vermont, New Hampshire, New York etc. For the record I do not like hunting, I would never do it, but I realise it would be essentially political suicide even in many Democratic leaning states.
One difficulty is that most Americans support common sense gun legislation but the Republicans will happily trot out lines about slippery slopes or claim that performing a background check is somehow the next iteration of communism. Language that is extremely effective, somehow, even now. A unified Democrat response would likely be able to overcome such rhetoric but, as we discussed earlier in this thread, it has proven to be extremely difficult to get “the left” to unify in messaging.
Sickens me to see Ted Cruz faux outrage at a school having unlocked doors but saying absolutely nothing about the weapon used to kill children - or even indeed the apparent cowardice of the on site police officers who allowed the shooter to enter the building and murder children while they hid in fear waiting for backup. How exactly does having one door with armed police manning it protect children if those same police officers run away to protect themselves? Obviously Cruz’s position is not a real suggestion, or real anger, you can see in his eyes the filthy smirk. The wink at his supporters and donors. They think all of this is funny, a joke and a game.
Wow…looks like police got to the school in Texas and then proceeded to wait outside while shooting went on inside. When parents wanted to rush in to do something g they stopped them from going in.
Gee, I wonder if this would be the case if it was a mostly-white school instead of an all Latino school
Addendum: It gets even worse. The cops went in to get their OWN kids out but prevented other parents from entering to get theirs
I despise Chuck Todd, but he does keep coming back to a valid point - they cannot identify any candidate in any race who is viewed to have lost an election because they were NOT pro gun restrictions. This points to the difference between support for a certain action and the relative importance people place on taking that action.
The irony of this is that the term slippery slope refers to a type of logical fallacy, yet it is the backstop for so much of GOP opposition to do anything on anything.
I know all about that, when I was young I took it all too seriously, then I went through a phase where I just laughed it all off thinking that is so mad, now I just think soo much has gone past a joke. It’s no longer serious or mad funny it’s … I just haven’t the words.
When the answer is more guns and bomb shelters to keep kids safe (Oh! and a slice of Gos or jesus, whatever) it’s not even worth crying.
Nah! those fences are far to flimsy, more walls are needed. All over the place, just ask Trump. We can take the kids pocket money to build them as well.
Just no face masks. Kids cannot deal with the trauma of it. And they must never read to Kill a Mockingbird, because it might make white people feel bad about themselves. Schools should be a happy go lucky environment.
There are two potential options here… Sadly you would probably need so many background checks (in contrast to getting a gun or getting it “oon”) for one of the options, you’d never be able to get it in on time (pun?). And, for the other, you would probably be arrested upon trying to deposit it.
