Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

Guessing he got too close to uncovering something he shouldn’t have known about and the “powers that be” are shutting it down in their own special way. more here.

The fact that the pedophilia side of the story has taken over a year to break would suggest otherwise. If they were trying to bury him, they would have leaked that in April 2022.

This looks somewhat more like journo covering for a pedo friend in the October story. Meek has not even been charged with anything relating to classified information.

hence the “hatchet job” reference. So they raid his house under the warrant of classified information, miraculously find some child porn on a laptop and no charges laid under the original warrant?

The story had eight months to be that. Child porn did not come out during all that time. The warrant was not about classified information, it was about child pornography, based on information provided by Dropbox. The original reporter had some information that that was the case, but Meek’s friend suppressed that information, deliberately turning it into a security/press freedom case story - which it never was. Wasn’t investigated, wasn’t part of the warrant, wasn’t a charge. Complete red herring. There was never a press freedom/classified information story here.

Rolling Stone led a defence by the press, eagerly picked up by the administration’s critics…of someone who very much appears to be a profoundly depraved pedophile. If anything, there is a basis to start sniffing around Rolling Stone for their motivation for trying to make a story about a pedophile awkwardly political.

That was not what the investigation was into. Siegel’s treatment of the story allegedly made clear the raid was unrelated to his work, but the editor at RS cut that and was happy to run with the insinuation it was due to the nature of his classified work

well I guess I should have delved deeper.

I mentioned a few weeks ago about how a popular venue down the road from me has been threatened with having its liquor licence revoked by the state over a drag show event it put on. We’re now getting reporting there were undercover agents at the event in question who documented in their official report there were no lewd acts for children to be exposed to, but the state is moving forward with the measures anyway.

The state rep in our district is a very outspoken critic of DeSantis and the GOP and is being pushed as a likely candidate to run for the party’s nom for governor in 26. It’s difficult to see this as anything than retribution against her and constituents.

Now just imagine how vindictive that odious little twat would be were he to become POTUS.

I haven’t forgotten how he targeted vulnerable people for a political stunt too, flying them to other states as they tried to seek asylum in FL.

He is a horrible man.

It is actually worse than that. He didn’t actually fly people to other states from Florida, Florida doesn’t have that much of a problem. Florida paid to fly them from Texas. Work that one out as a responsible use of public funds…but American conservatives seem to have left those trifling concerns behind.

She just got the state lawmakers in a bit of a check mate that should be devastating but is unlikely to have any impact in the absurd world we’re forced to inhabit.

We are in the process of expanding gun rights to allow for permitless open carry, with very few exceptions being stated making it hard for anyone to deny someone their right to open carry on their property (e.g. on campus). One exception - the state legislature. Our rep filed an amendment to the bill saying that if guns in public spaces make you safer then guns should be allowed in legislative meetings as well. The GOP voted it down because of course they dont actually believe that more guns make you safer.

How is that a checkmate? Logic was long abandoned. Wasn’t there something about the Supreme Court ruling that protests outside abortion clinics was free speech but protesting outside the Supreme Court was not permitted?

That is easy to fix. Gov. of Massachusetts agrees to take the refugees in, fast-track their application and assist in getting funds for their relocation if they agree to move to Florida.

The US right - We cannot be teaching CRT and telling our white children to be ashamed of themselves. Our education must be based on our founding western european traditions

Educators - Ok, as part of this libaral arts classical education you like, here is a lesson on Western Art History. This is a famous statue of David

The US Right - Nooooooooo. That’s porn. You are a groomer and must be fired

“ Well, we’re Florida, OK? Parents will decide. Parents are the ones who are going to drive the education system here in Florida. The governor said that, and we’re with the governor. Parents don’t decide what is taught. But parents know what that curriculum is. ”

Tell you what, fuck off the teachers (never mind that they might just know a thing or two more about the topics they teach and about teaching in general…I mean it’s not like they’ve been trained at it or have any experience, right?)…and why don’t the parents just teach? Problem solved.

Jesus wept :man_facepalming:t2:

Are you referring to the blonde haired blue eyed chap that preached turn the other cheek and love thy neighbour… I’m confused, is that still the reel line?

An increasing number of home schoolers apparently means people do think exactly like that. My sister-in-law is homeschooling her kids but at least she actually was an elementary school teacher before she decided to do that.

I know another person who is homeschooling and she knows absolutely nothing - had one job in a daycare that she quit after less than a year and has spent the rest of her adult life trying to get famous on Instagram (unsuccessfully to date). She’s also decided to home school her kid which makes me really concerned about the quality of education that poor child will receive.

It’s just anecdotal, but I know loads of people who home school, or send their kids to various charter schools or private schools (not private in the UK sense, where it has a different connotation). The whole thing seems very strange to my British eyes.

The school curriculum should be apolitical. Core subjects, nationally agreed on by experts, with certain standards to be met. Then assorted options around that, again nationally agreed by experts, with certain standards to be met. The kids (with guidance from their parents and advice from teachers as appropriate) round out the education by choosing an option from column A, B, C, or whatever.

This stuff should be nationally agreed, and if there is any debate on the curriculum and so on, let it happen among educators, at a high level, so that by the time individual schools, teachers, parents and kids are in the mix, the matter is settled and isn’t even up for discussion for them.

That’s how it should be.

But unfortunately, in America schooling is a political football. So things vary from state to state, and even within states. Funding models vary too. And to my eye it seems quite easy to home school with no particular skill set to do that, other than a misplaced notion of freedom and parental rights.

There also seems to be myriad new schools springing up too, and presumably the standards vary widely.

Whole thing is a shitshow.
