Dominik SZOBOSZLAI: 2025/26

How did you evade Mascot?

He begged me to come back.

Szoboszlai just stops running.

If you expect Dom to follow that runner all the way it would require him to run past his own CB standing around doing nothing taking responsibility for no one.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’d expect from him, rather than jogging back. To me, it’s a clear sign that Szoboszlai’s had enough of it too.

I think it clearly shows that the tactics aren’t working. You can call Dom out for not running at this point but the shape of the team here is shite. The CB is neither playing offside nor going to the player and, while Dom doesn’t look good in this clip here, nor does anyone else. Arne bears the responsibility for that, not Dom.

It’s not the fault of an individual. The most advanced player is Gravenberch who is trying to press but no one else is making an effort. The other 4 Liverpool players behind him are ball watching, the pass is made and O’Reilly is released, who then passes to Doku and merrily keeps going with no one picking him up. At 0:06 there are 5 players running towards their own end with the other 5 sans Szoboszlai a good 20 yards back jogging.

You don’t need to have done coaching badges to quickly come to the conclusion that everything is wrong: the positioning, the lack of coordination and effort. No one takes responsibility, no one even reacts. They moved the ball from their box into ours without as much as a challenge. And the really sad part is that we’ve conceded this type of goal again and again.

My point wasn’t so much to blame Szoboszlai for the goal – everyone was just going through the motions – but rather to highlight that the players aren’t putting in the effort for the manager anymore; in my opinion, that wouldn’t have happened to Szoboszlai a while back.

But I think that has been the pattern for most of the season though. I remember back in October when our initial bad run had already started @Noo_Noo highlighted some figures that had come out suggesting our work rate defensively etc was high, @Limiescouse pointed out that although statistically they appeared to be doing a lot of work, when you looked at the actual play, you could see it wasn’t actually justified - yes, they were running back but not really attempting to break up play or close off lanes. Adam Clery also had a video out on it around the same time.

Noone puts a shoulder in, ever. How can you slow the opposition down if you don’t hassle them?
We don’t even bother marking dangerous players. If you give Rodri the space we did your asking for trouble. Not to mention that big lump up top they have, forget his name :joy:, not one bump all match. Really pathetic!
I do realise we didn’t mark dangerous players under Klopp either which cost us a few times, Kevin de Bruyne for example.

Because we didn’t do man marking under Klopp. We defended ball oriented.

Whatever the defensive system leaving an opponents playmaker free in midfield is stupid.
You understand I’m sure. I mean FFS at least keep an eye on them!

This isn’t strictly about Szoboszlai, but since his reaction started this whole thing, this is probably the best place for it. In any case, it concerns all the players. And the entire club really:

But for section of fans, loyalty and togetherness goes only one way.

Criticizing performances are part and parcel of supporting a club but not calling them names like fraud. Yes the manager seems to have no clue at this moment, the players are performing way below standards, but calling them names, togetherness? What a joke.

Least he’s said something. It is a bit like when a politician says something and then goes I’m sorry you were offended.

If he puts in the performances on the pitch it will be forgotten. I thought he was fighting hard on Saturday. Some of his passing frustrates me in how it kills the momentum. But the commitment was definitely there

The main change we saw last year was Arne pressing us to not try to make the killer so pass so early so often. He thought we were too intent on always looking forward, and that was the main cause of us losing control of games, and even of wasting promising opportunities to create a quality chance by not being patient enough.

He seemingly wanted to double down on that this summer and into this season. It shouldnt be surprising at all that some players, especially those who really thrived in a high tempo approach, look a bit gun shy like they are second guessing themselves.
