Szoboszlai is in a very interesting place. I think most people projected that he would be the one to make way for Wirtz. But his energy and relentlessness are vital qualities.
How do you get him into the side? I don’t think you can bench Mac Allister or Gravenberch.
It’s the best 3 from 4 in world football and with enough flexibility about them that yo7 can easily see all four of them on the pitch at the same time ina coherent set up
Grav, Mac, Szob MF 3
Wirtz left inside forward… Kerkez has the quality and drive along the left meaning Wirtz plays left inside.
What is then interesting is how to play Gakpo and Hugo…
Wirtz and Gakpo/Ekitike will be quite fluid (e.g . expect to see them popping up across the left and cf spaces).
And then Wirtz/Ekitike especially can drop deeper when necesssary - which creates space for Szob when he is playing more advanced, like vs City last year.
That pass at 4.20 is so sexy. What a player
It’s very rare all CMs will be fit you have to remember it’s pretty much twice a week from September until at least March.
What this allows is to say get Maca up to full fitness, also players drop in and out of form, it was something Klopp realised later on with our forwards that’s why we all seemed top heavy.
Salah misses a key period for us as well, the idea about a best 11 is gone and has been gone since the 90s and yet it still persists in fan bases and punditry
Thing is, so far Kerkez has been tucking inside a lot to create that 3 at the back shape when we build from deep. He doesn’t really go as wide forward as much as some were imagining (“Frimpong and Kerkez will just bomb forward equally and provide us width”). Doesn’t mean he can’t go forward in different phases of the game, because I also think the option with Szobo at #10 and Wirtz in that inside left channel (sort of how Coutinho was used a lot under Klopp) is very possible and something we might see in big games. But question remains what would happen to width on that side. Wirtz will still have the freedom to ordinate pretty central between the lines, we see that we drop him in the halfway circle a lot when we build from deep. Szobo in deeper zones still has a lot to prove in my opinion.
