Dominik SZOBOSZLAI: 2025/26

When you are pressing you press based on what is in front of you not what is behind. Someone who is pressing by himself (in a side that is supposed to be pressing) is simply being let down by his team mates

Agreed, also, if he is pressing without instruction to do so, then he should be bollocked by Arne.

I’ve said all season it isn’t the press from the front that is the issue it is those behind that don’t back it up and leave players completely open for an easy outlet pass.

Our pressing shape has gotten worse over the last 12 months

Dom runs from deep to press on his own, its terrible to watch.

there are situations where he could expect better support, but theres also plenty of performative presses that is just basically effort for efforts sake.

id also like to add that whilst yes, there needs to be expectation of support, you need to have awareness of the shape behind you and when to just fill the space.

maybe your point stands if we are a pressing team, but we are not, which magnifys just how performative it looks…

he basically picks a random moment to put alot of energy into a waste of energy. then we do nothing of the sort for five minutes, then he does it again.

i dont really know how anyone can absolve Dom of any responsibility for these… i know theres explantions for everything, and you can discuss minute details of when to go and what the shape should be etc… but you can also just use your eyes (as a player) see whats going on around you and decide not to rush in…it mimics junior football on some extreme cases.

Slot thinks we are. And if we are then he is correctly taking opportunities, but one that needs 3 or 4 more players to immediately join in lock step to cut down the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th possible ball

Doms problem is he runs too fast and the others are too slow and can’t keep up

Hendo used to do exactly the same under Klopp, but the rest of the team went with him

not sure what to say to that. to be honest…Slot seems to think alot of things…

hes running into spaces, based on an ideaology, not an ingame scenario…

theres something about the press that people think is mystical and technically above the common man, when its not…

Dom, dont press on your own, if the shapes not right, then dont do it.

nah, not for me… theres moments to do it, and theres moments to stay…

again, part of the package for me with Dom, alot of performative gestures, gesticulating, pressing on your own… not a fan.

Hendo also worked within a unit, and went when the moment was right…

You are again forgetting the last bit, the team saw Hendo press and backed him up, under Arne our players just stand still an play with their balls!

Sure, but it does flip the attitude to defending 180 degrees compared to what most people learn. Most people learn a defensive structure where your cues come from behind. The CB picks up the mark and pushes the next guy forward on to their mark and everything funnels forward and/or out from there. Essentially, as a mid you stay in a block until you get word from behind that everyone is picked up and you can start putting pressure on the ball.

In a pressing side, not one that just ruins after the ball, but a side properly set up to press, you do not wait for direction behind you. You cannot wait for that because if you do you will be too late. You respond to cues from what is happening in front of you (or the pressing trigger as most now call it) and when you see it you go. You cannot wait to ensure that everyone is ready to go before you commit because if you do then you are the one who will be late and will be letting everyone else down.

So when Dom finds himself in those positions he sees a pass that creates a trigger to press. He is not going to win the ball, but if he angles his run correctly and everyone else responds properly you have a great chance of winning it back collectively. But no one else goes. The fact those situations occur is likely largely why we’ve become so shit at pressing because once you start doubting everyone else will go you hesitate and your failures start compounding. We look like a side with some muscle memory of how to do it, with expectations from the manager to keep doing it, but too insecure from a season of failures to really commit to the level required for it to work.

I look forward to seeing where in Europe he is going on a mini break this mid-week.

Thing is he’s got the whole summer.

Great post.

My only issue with Szob and anyone that presses, they don’t angle their run correctly, this is not just force play in a direction, but also sets the cue for where his team mates should move.

Even so Szoboszlai presses in a poor fashion.
You need to force the play in the direction you wish it to go i.e blocking one of the easy sideway outs.
There is some awareness required and Szoboszlai doesn’t show any, just charges forward which at the level they are is unacceptable.

Hendon never pressed like that, Hendon had awareness and communicated with his partners.

The press with Hendo was organised still doesn’t excuse Szoboszlai for the way he executed.
Sure it’s the system most at fault however defending poor execution just because it’s Szoboszlai doesn’t help.
Btw Hendo didn’t press up the centre he pressed from a a side.

Szob pressed right of centre and Hendo used to do the same.

Hendo also did it under a coach, who wholeheartedly believed in it and it was mostly a well oiled machine.

Remember it was Jurgen who bought Szob as he saw the workrate and his ability to press.

Szoboszlai has never pressed in an ā€˜intelligent’ manner!

Massively overrated by our fans because of a few nice clutch goals.

Can“t run a game, create or protect the back four. He“s a runner with a few fancy shots.
