In re Colombia, it doesn’t look like much of a victory for Trump, really, beyond the fact that he’ll claim it was. Petro said he would take the deportees in dignified conditions. That appears to be what he has now done.
Looks like almost all mainstream media are misconstruing Petro’s objection here, unintentional or otherwise.
Increasingly clear the last week or so has been all about Trump, nothing else, and certainly not about the American people, his actions are affecting plenty already includes it seems many who voted for the despicable bastard.
Well, this is not deeply disturbing at all. That Gollum lookalike Miller thinks most US federal employees are “overwhelmingly” left of centre when it comes to their politics. WTF does that have to do with their job? Only Trump fanatics can do federal work?
I’m assuming that one is a performative cruelty one. Are those under 19 still allowed access to automatic weapons? I’m wondering how doing that to angry distressed kids is going to pan out.
Is there a difference in how it’s portrayed in Colombia vs elsewhere? Because if so, and it plays well towards his domestic audience, then it’s a win-win. Regardless, the media coverage is really sickening.
New polling said 85 percent of the self-ruling Danish territory’s population are against the idea of becoming part of the U.S., as President Donald Trump repeatedly voices his desire to acquire Greenland.
The poll also showed only 8 percent of Greenlanders would accept American citizenship if they had to choose between a Danish or an American passport.
As Trump and his cronies try to justify their immigration actions on the basis that the people being affected are by definition criminals, keep the following in mind
it is not in fact a criminal offense just to be in the country without legal approval. It is a criminal offense to enter the country without approval (sneaking over the border), but that applies to only about half the people here without legal status, and has long since stopped being the primary stressor of the system. Anyone without legal status is eligible for deportation, but that is NOT a criminal penalty. A significant part of the broken discourse around the issue appears to be based on not understanding this important distinction.
Despite all the focus on needing to be strict on immigration enforcement because these are “bad hombres”, during Trump’s last term they actually fared significantly worse than the preceding and subsequent administration at removing criminals…those who had committed a criminal act. It takes resources to deport someone and so other administrations had enforcement priorities that focused effort on identifying those who had criminal charges. Trump abandoned those policies to focus on broad unfocused sweeps. This “common sense” approach was actually worse at achieving its stated objectives than the policies they inherited.
The above is all relevant, because we are right back there…
Around half those arrested by ICE have no criminal record
And this is before we even get into the issue of “collateral” of people who have legal status being caught up in these sweeps and treated as criminals
This isn’t even an argument over the morality of all of this. It is simply pointing out that Trump’s approach to immigration is ineffective at achieving his own stated objectives. I really feel the incompetent angle is a much underused attack against him. The reality is that if your vote was motivated by wanting to see criminal illegals removed and prevented from coming in, both the Obama and Biden administrations were FAR better at accomplishing that than Trump was first time around and there is nothing about the way he is going now that suggests he’ll fare any better this time around.
This is outright racism superficially disguised as rounding up criminals. It’s nazi style sweeps to rid America of the dirty, wrong-coloured aliens, who eat dogs and cats, take American jobs, marry pure blooded American women.
Their primary drive isn’t the criminality of the immigrants but their hatred towards them.
Yeah, if anyone had any doubts about this, it was made clear by the attack on the Haitians this summer. They called them illegal when they weren’t. When this error was pointed out the response was to make clear that illegal is a not a rule of law thing, but a goodness of fit with a blood and soil view of what being American means. To people like Vance, if you dont have generations of descendants buried here you are not, and CANNOT be American, and they will work to make law and policy match that view point.
People who rejected that during the campaign season were simply talking out of their arse. They either were not paying attention, were comfortable talking about things they didnt understand, or just simply refused to acknowledge things that seemed too ugly to be true because it was all being said right out in the open.
Expectations are that the Federal Reserve will keep rates as they are in today’s scheduled announcement. Trump wants them down, there are concerns within the Fed that inflation is ticking upwards again. Keeping them where they are is seen as a compromise.
Not sure the White House is interested in compromises.
Google has a pretty consistent history of these sorts of geographical adjustments to reflect the stated position of the government in the country the user is detected to be in.
