With this Administration, he and Schumer are the only remaining line of resistance. The Court is done, the formerly somewhat neutral branches of the Executive are in the direction of reality show contestants, Trump will be at war with the Federal Reserve next week. It really is his job to use what few democratic institutions are left to exercise some level of oversight though control is not possible. AOC and Bernie can get on social media and in front of cameras and try to deliver a new message for Fall 2026, umpteen other Democrats can freely do so. But Jeffries and Schumer have absolutely pressing concerns.
If the progressive support hasnât figured out how to work within the system to at least some extent to redirect the Democratic Party and avoid what we are seeing now, wellâŚhttps://www.reddit.com/r/LeopardsAteMyFace/
It blows my mind that as a graduate student 35 years ago in Ann Arbor, I was being lectured by an American progressive (on the roof of a co-op, no less) about the need to be radical, who was completely dismissive of my centrist, mixed market economy views (platitudes like âyou need a robust economy to pay for universal health careâ and other such nonsense). I guess not much has changed
I think Jeffries is depressingly uninspiring and I donât get what was going through his head in making that tweet. But his role as party leader in the house is far more of an internal role than a public one. I get in this period of there being a power vacuum people will look to him, but it is not why he was elevated to this position and is seemingly something that he will not develop the chops for.
The Dems as a party seem pretty lost right now, but that is typical for this period immediately after a losing election where a party didnt just lose but had their message very clearly rejected. I think they rightly view that the public has little interest in hearing from them right now - approval rating for the party is about 20-30 points underwater, which is astonishing. People like AOC and Bernie have the advantage (maybe unfair positionâŚhave earned it?) of knowing when they speak they speak for themselves not the party so arenât in the same position. Someone like Jeffries, even if he had something to say, does not have that luxury. When he speaks he speaks for the party and right now they are unsure what the party should be saying if it wants to be successful and believes people donât want to hear from them anyway. Trump will solve both of those problems for them in short order, and it wont be Jeffries who takes up that leash because that just is not what he is as a politician. Who it will be I dont know, but in what is expected to be a crowded presidential nomination field expect individuals with more oomph to start pushing their way to the front soon.
With that in mind, I thought it was interesting that Big Gretch has rejected the opportunity to throw her hat into the ring for the soon to vacant MI Senate seat. As a popular, term-limited governor that suggests she has her sights firmly set on the presidency and so expect her to try to get out and try to take the lead fairly soon.
I read that sheâs said she wants to spend time with family after her gubernatorial term. Probably just going to wait and see what the landscape looks like in the next year or so first I reckon.
The Democrats should get another narrative going. Trump fired the head of the Federal Aviation Administration on day one of his Presidency. The Dems need to shout that loud and clear. Talk about how well qualified they were. Talk about how Trump is hollowing out expertise, and the inherent dangers with that.
More likely they wonât be on message and will sadly allow free rein to Trump in the forming of public opinion.
Iâm also sure her familyâs new found interest in sampling all the fried food delicacies the state of Iowa has to offer will be completely coincidental as well
So Iâm in the middle of puppy training which involves standing outside in all weathers watching the pup poop and showing significant encouragement and joy when successful.
