This is an excellent article from Noah Smith. The tl;dr version is that whether or not the administration is speaking hard truths to Europe or engaging in performative bs for the base at home, the conclusion is the same - Europe must, and can, defend itself against Russia.
Europe has overwhelming advantages over Russia in many different facets. The question is whether the Europeans have the political will to implement policies necessary to face Russia directly.
Vance on Fox invoking ordo amoris, unfortunately betrayed by his stupid face and his excruciating, hateful little eyes (not to mention, yâknow, everything he says and does).
Funny to think the next great schism could be an obstinacy of puritanical protestants who converted to the one true faith for the vibesssss yâall tamping with the pope because they skipped the lesson on ex cathedra.
America has not shown the political will to directly face Russia. America has capitulated. Russia will get everything that it wants.
Europe needs to find a way to regroup in the new paradigm we have. It should include forming a strong defense, collectively, hi tech, nuclear armed, and able to achieve at least MAD with anyone, for the purpose of having a strong deterrent. It is madness, but this is the world we have.
America is not a reliable ally, and possibly not even an ally. The clarity we have enjoyed for 80 years, where everyone knew who was a friend and who was a foe, has evaporated.
PS - America does have a point about Europe paying more for its defense. But there is some important context that isnât being referenced.
America spends so much on its defense for at least a couple of reasons. First, because it is good for the American economy. All the jobs, research, development, and stock that people hold in defense companies is good for the American economy. That is nothing to do with Europe.
Second, America has attempted to rule the world, militarily, more than any other nation in history before. 800+ bases. A big stick in every corner of the globe. That is what America has wanted to do, and again, it is nothing to do with Europe.
America has invested so much money on defense because of these reasons, and Europe should decouple from that madness, and form its own independent defense.
The US has a very valid point in regards to NATO and WHO contributions. Infact Bill and Melinda Gates invest more into the WHO than any other Country apart from the US, China, hmmmmâŚ,
Yes, America spends a lot on its Military/Defence because as a Country it sees the importance of this. Itâs like an institution for them.
I think Europe lost its appetite/didnât have the means for War after WWII to a certain degree, Countries were destroyed, needed to be rebuilt and owed a shit load of debt to the US, who financed their efforts. Europe, by signing treaties, NATO, etc prioritised rebuilding on the safety net of no immediate conflict and the US as a big brother.
The US over the years has cemented this position and Europeâs over reliance on the US is still very much evident. However, I do think the Ukraine/Russia conflict has awoken a few peoples eyes to this and that European countries will start investing more.
Regarding ruling the WorldâŚ.military wise or not. Is this before 1900 or after?
Whether Europe should decouple or not from the US I am not sure. However, as you alluded to, I believe it is important for Europe to invest more and not be so reliant on America.
Europe isnât one country, but again, itâs a political mainstream opinion that it needs to spend more on defence. Itâs also not like nothing at all has happened in the last few years already, pretty much all European countries have already increased their defence spending. Trump all of a sudden pulling a 5% number out of his fat ass - oh well. But thatâs not really what the outrage is about. There was quite a lot of other stuff said regarding Ukraine, NATO.
And then being lectured on Free Speech and Democracy by these fuckers of all people was just the cherry on top. Along with the meddling in elections and campaigning for fascists and Russian bots. Again, not an ally, not a âfriendâ.
