I would no longer be surprised now. I am a bit numbed after today. I thought Zelensky was going to be fucked there in deal and had to make ugly, ugly concessions and submit, but not like this. This was over attack, uglier than sin. The United States has joined Russiaās invasion, with indirect diplomatic and ecnomical aid, and a hige direct political high hive.
The political victory for Kreml is bigger than in my worst possible nightmare. I have been naive. I did not think it was going to come to this. This is beyond what I had imagined and I have not been so naive, I have tried to warn and inform people of the actual danger; but this is so much worse.

Textbook Trump. People opposed to him frequently find themselves getting criticized for taking a bad option for themselves in response to what Trump has done. But that is what he does. He poisons everything he comes into contact with so that everyone else is left to pick only among the least bad options available to them.
Unfortunately the malaise in kicking Russians ass between 2022 and now is coming home to roost. All the appeasements, slow aid, hampering Ukrainian tactical and strategic possibilities with idiotic restrictions on how to use the weapons supplied have in part lead to this reality. Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan and Olaf Scholtz in particular need to hang their head in shame. The chance was there, the balls severely lacking.

I understand, and actually respect, the very initial cautiousness regarding aswering Russian escalation step by step. Nuclear War is a terrible deterrent and a huge threat, but it was clear soon, that Russia only continued the escalatory ladder, it was also soon clear that RUās red lines are inside RU and not abroad (despite what they say) and the braindead restrictons on using western arms inside Russia, the slow roll of military equippment and the idea that āoh, we have given some billions, we have given a lotā, when it is a fucking Great Power with the legacy storage of the fucking Soviet Union they are fighting, was beyond the pale. Russia will not use nukes unless their statehood is threatened or unless their army collapses and completely routs. Ironically, now, there is a clear risk of use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russia due to Trump.
The war should have been over now (or closing in on the end). The military reality in 2023 was greatly favourable for Ukraine had the actual aid been as needed. In the end, the cost of aid to Ukraine only increases when you are too cautious, as you say. And now, the cost for everyone in Europe will dramatically increase because we did indeed fuck up. The braindead and seemingly automatic idea that some people have, that Russia cannot be defeated in a war of choice, is unfortunately still epidemic. The fact is, that if you attack Russia, you cannot win (because then it is no longer a war of choice), but Russia will of course retreat from foreign territory if the pain is too big. But such logic escapes many people, unfortunately also many leaders.
