The goal (and please understand this and wake up in case someone still is asleep) is to subjugate and annex Canada. To do so, one must destroy its economy and create social unrest. It’s deadly serious.

I guess they will be moving to 50% tariffs on potash today then. To American farmers, ‘have fun!’.

I agree with the sentiment, but as we both know, they will hurt you much more and it’s fucking infuriating. They are literally seeking to destroy you, to unravel your social fabric and cause unrest, so they can annex you into their filthy empire.

I’m sure Trump will be able to get plenty of potash from his mates in Russia and Belarus.

He will and its likely part of their plan, but it will take a couple of months to arrange.

not in the next two weeks. Almost half their annual importing is between mid-March and mid-April, and not many farmers appear to have taken this threat seriously and got orders in during February.

@Arminius
I don’t know how poular Trump is exactly, but twitter is of course full of Canadian Fifth Column and Quislings. How many do you think hate Canadian liberals enough to support a take over by the Trump administration ? On Twitter, a fair few, but in the real world they are surely less numerous (I hope).

Still, I know that Canadian conservatism has been plagued and infected by US MAGA brand culture war thinking. One can also see the tendency on this forum, from 1 or 2, that they sympathise with American style nationalist-populism more than actual political conservatism. A bit like getting infected by a plague due to proximity. Unavoidable perhaps, but still worrying.

Their own tariffs do far more damage to them than Canada’s economy, though per capita it will obviously be more intense here. If they go to 50% on key inputs, and we go to 50% on the American consumer goods we have stopped buying anyway, the asymmetric nature will simply intensify. In general, what we sell the US is more inelastic and are generally primary goods, while the US has had the inside track on the consumer market goods. That has been breaking astonishingly quickly without tariffs.

Would this put an onus on the uk to help canada as Charlie boy is head of state?

A market for marmalade and pork pies. :grin:
Oh! Almost forgot, marmite. :rofl:

If they are on twitter, well, that’s already a mark against them. To put it in context, Costco in Canada is discontinuing carrying Gretzky’s wine, because no one has been buying them for a month. People in Edmonton(!) have turned against him, let alone the rest of the country, due to his association with Trump. He was a national legend three months ago.

They are definitely out there, so-called MAGA Maple, but they are a small minority even among identified Conservatives. Meanwhile, our Quebecois brethren are burning white-hot, the French language press here is talking about it as economic war and has been for a month. There is probably more national unity now than at any point in the last 60 years. When Canada beat the US in the 4 Nations, you could hear it in the streets.

Thank you for your update.

Starmer appeared to duck a question in Washington, and Charles has been silent (probably for UK constitutional reasons). I don’t think the monarchy is going to last much longer.

The UK has very noticably been very careful to defend Canda. I think everyone who follows geopolitics have noticed that. Some what understandable, but it must surely damage relations socially at least.

I think, anyway.

Bizarre. The tariffs she is talking about don’t affect European manufacturers. For a month at least, European cars will have a ~25% advantage on American-made cars, because all American-made cars have components from Mexico and Canada. She completely missed the auto dealer’s point.
