It’s complicated because it isnt really a binary choice, so the support for statehood changes depending on how the question is asked and the alternative options presented, but it pretty consistently the most popular option, often the majority, and always far superior to independence.

I don’t understand how Puerto Ricans can be American citizens, but they can’t vote. Presumably if they could, that would be a big help to the Democrats.

They can vote, just not for a representative of Puerto Rico. If they are resident in the United States, they can vote as an American citizen (unless they live in DC, in which case they are still sort of screwed).
You don’t need to dig very far in MAGA circles to find this as a suggested configuration for Canada, because they don’t like the idea of another California.

I know it’s a non-starter as Canada is a sovereign country, but it would be funny if they negotiated a strategy with progressive Democrats, came into the fold, and massively improved America by kicking the Republicans to touch from this point forward. They would lose every election. America then adopts policies like universal healthcare, and well funded public education, and the people love it, and the country doesn’t look back. In a way, Canada would save America.
