OMFG. Speaking as an economist, the profession/science suffers more than most from the peril of mistaking your model for reality. But this is an astonishing and extreme version. That is a basic equation from about 3rd year undergraduate economics, introducing study of international trade (and tariffs). They have used it to calculate the tariff that would bring the trade to a zero balance - and even the passage they cite notes they are assuming general equilibrium doesn’t matter
