In the end, Waltz didn’t suit the campaign they ended up running down the stretch and so they largely muzzled him, and so Shaprio might well have been a better fit for that. But they didnt realize at the time that was the campaign they were going to run, and Shaprio actively didnt want it because it didnt fit well with his own presidential ambitions.

Might be because of the Netanyahu visit, but who knows

It’s a fairly typical response to expectations of crowds and protests. I was in DC a good bit in the 00s and they seemed to be ever present through Bush’s second term.

Vietnam’s offer to set tariffs on US goods to zero has been rejected, because it doesn’t address the ‘cheating’.

So is the next response to promise to sell us less stuff to help better balance the trade deficit we have with them?

Tim Apple (Cook) is probably wondering now why he bothered spending $15-20b to start decoupling from China

The lesson everyone else will take is there is no point in starting the negotiation as a supplicant.

One side me of thinks it’s good to have right wingers finally call out Trump’s shit in this way

But we’re here because people like this who knew better spent the best part of 10 years pretending he actually had a point when talking similar levels of nonsense about things they didnt care about or on issues they thought his insanity would push the country in a direction they wanted

At the most fundamental level, this is the House’s fault. They abdicated responsibility for trade policy, and handed it over to someone who has made no goddamn sense on it for years. It should be career-ending for virtually the entire House GOP.

New driving range?

Yeah look I get it, but I’m saying if they wanted to guarantee the win, Shapiro was the play. You nail down PA and all of a sudden Trump’s path becomes a lot narrower. I think Shapiro had much broader appeal, too. Walz was an old midwestern rube, and young progressives didn’t want that. I also think parading Liz Cheney around like that was going to win any voters at all was a massive misstep.

It’s just typical of the hapless Democrat party. They have generally popular policy platforms, but absolutely suck at messaging and actually passing anything.

Fairly certain Walz was more popular with young progressives than Shapiro

Young progressives didn’t know who Walz was before he was the pick. He got popular at first with the whole “they’re weird” thing - which was actually working well then they abandoned it.

Walz tanked in the VP debate and that was that.

Yeah you dont pick the “let me sign these bombs we’re sending to israel” guy if you want to win over the young progressives.

And as for the debate piece, they certainly dont turn off a guy who is hitting the right notes because he isnt polished in a vP debate that no one watches against smary fuck who represents everything they despise
