What’s a realistic alternative?
Not sure the current situation can be compared with 1979. The international situation was very different then, the intents were different, and the tools used were also different. Driving up interest rates isn’t the same than starting a global trading war.
As @koptician’s earlier post showed ( Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2) - #7495 by koptician ), Trumps methods are far more akin to what Hoover did in the early thirties, which sparked the Great Depression, lasting throughout the decade until WW2.

The Euro would be the obvious one. I believe that Iran even used it for oil pricing at one point.

I remember when Trump was in Paris (previous term), There was a lot of talk of the Caudillo being unfathomably impressed with the Bastille Day parade and he wanted to create the same tradtion in the US.

The Cultural Revolution came with several dozens of millions violent deaths, so let’s hope that it won’t come to that. But indeed, Trump invoking imaginary new ‘dangers’ facing the nation, justifying in that way his demential actions, is somewhat similar to what happened under Mao.
When an ideology starts taking more place than actual facts, it never ends well.
