Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2)

What are they going to think of next, selling oil to Saudi Arabia?

There’s a lot wrong right now, but I don’t actually see what the problem is with the Arizona Cattle Rancher. Clearly he’s got a decent business enterprise, but to take the next step he would like a shot at getting access to foreign markets.

If his product is good enough, and the price is right, he might succeed. If his product is not good enough, and/or the price isn’t right, he will fail.

It seems he just wants an opportunity. I’ve no problem with that, and I would trust that in an open and fair process, the market will sort it all out.

He appears to have it backwards. Oz exports beef to the US because they produce more than they need meaning they have no need for imported US beef. If he has a gripe, maybe it would be about lack of protectionism that allows foreign beef in to compete with him in the US market

I would ask if he understood the foreign market?

EU wont accept beef with growth hormones etc. Is he aware of that? Does he understand that he the EU is off the table and he needs to offer the right product?

I suspect in many cases, they dont a d have very little will to find out why. They just expect it.

Agreed. This one area where Trump is correct to consider tariffs. Going nuts across all industries and imports is dumb.

I’m sure there are myriad details. I know food standards are different between America and the EU - food dyes, GMO products, and all the rest of it.

I don’t know what the issues are that the rancher encounters, but at face value, he should have an opportunity to meet whatever requirements are in place and then get his product to market.

If there’s no market for his product, or if the price or quality is wrong, he will fail.

But I like the idea that he should have an opportunity to find out.

Australia has very strict Biosecurity for importing live animals, meat products and plants, and the USA don’t meet the required saftey standards.

If the US farmers want access to the Australian market, then they need to convince the FDA to raise the minimum standard of food standard in the US.

Is there a mechanism that allows farmers to exceed that minimum standard, prove they do and then give them access to these markets?

For example, there are strict guidelines and requirements in the UK if a farm wants to sell organic products. Some farmers know this, go through those steps and become an organic farm.

Is the US the same I wonder?

Worried that other countries will be pressured to kowtow to less stringent regulations. Depends how hard the tariffs’ effects get.

The now utterly dysfunctional FDA that is no longer trusted with ensuring American food standards are actually met - that is weeks away from being an added ā€˜non-tariff barrier’ for exports to Canada.

Im sure there is, but it would mean retooling his entire operation and operating at a price point that could not compete in the US market. Maybe there is a viable business there, like premium grass fed no antibiotic raised beef. But it would be a niche play to make that switch.

I guess it shows how low the current standard is.

I think it is also fair to question how much of the higher standards are evidence based vs how much was based on feeling good about being stricter on regulations (see the ā€œno GMOā€ movement" in california)

The food part of the FDA was always massively under funded. The drug and Biotech portion got around that by introducing user fees paid by the companies. That saw a massive expansion of the workforce, much improved turn around times and a shift to the FDA being considered the best regulatory framework in the world. DOGE gutted the department that managed user fees

Tried to read a Trump ā€œtruthā€ about possibly opening the door for talks with China. Couldn’t even make it through one sentence of his diarrhea. Spare a thought for people that have to shift through this shit for a living. They must be losing brain cells staring at that nonsense for hours.
