There are long term geopolitical implications and if there is a true economical decoupling, then this, of course, greatly increases the risk of war.
One of the main incentives for China to not invade Taiwan, is the economical ties to the US, which would be vulnerable to sanctions. If there are no or significantly reduced ties, China may view the economical risks as far less grievious than previously and this could aid in changing their calculus.
Then if you add the recent comments from Washington regarding Taiwan, it does not look good for them.
If the world changes, I think it would be very important for Taiwan to abandon rethoric (and dreams) of independence and strategically work for (and communicate this clearly to the People’s Republic) that they seek autonomy, but not independence.

Good post. Quick question: What would the nuance of autonomy v independence look like for Taiwan?
At first glance, too much autonomy is starting to look a lot like independence. Do you have any thoughts on where the line would be drawn, so that Taiwan and their way of life is preserved, but China is satisfied?

I didn’t sleep more than two hours tonight (trying to stay up until 1000 PM so I don’t wake up during the middle of the night) , so my brain is not working at an adequate capacity and your question is complicated. I am having a shallow “surface thoughts only day” and have been struggling today with work (I am making a technical drawing, using a drawing-program for the first time, and my brain keeps freezing and I re-start all the time, which is why I am posting here now and not working). Slow day.
I don’t dare to answer you. I would forget important details that would seem obvious to me in a day or so.
But I can note that autonomy did not work as well as many had hoped in Hong Kong. But I also think it’s a mistake to necessarilly make a direct comparison (but obvious similarities).
But yes, too much autonomy is a problem probably.

After Hong Kong and the collapse of one country two systems, autonomy is a pipedream. It would be just an idea they tell console themselves with while trying to ignore getting sucked into China proper.

This is causing great outrage and head-shaking here. Trump simply claims that Germany is now building one coal-fired power plant per week because wind power hasn´t worked here, and we were almost bankrupt because it all didn`t work.
He just pulls these lies out of his ass, sorry for my “french” but it really annoys me. Millions of people over there and all over the world hear this and the stupid ones believe it too
