Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2)

But balanced in a way that explodes the debt and with big emergency reason to hang their hat as several of our recent presidents were able to use to explain away the direction of the debt under them.

Fiscal irresponsibility should be hung around their neck as a scarlet letter for evermore, but you know that come the next election the GOP will be the more trusted party on the economy. Because people are fuckwits.

It’s one of the most unusual things about politics over here. The Republicans are seen as the steady hand on the economy, fiscally responsible, and old school in terms of keeping the debt down.

It’s actually the opposite, and I can’t fathom how they deserve their reputation!

Same in the UK. The Conservatives are seen to be better for the economy, when the statistics show that Labour leave the country better off than the Tories do.

The powers of the media…

Next Treasury auction is going to be tense. Yesterday’s wasn’t ideal, but the 20-year is sort of a fringe. If the auction of the 10-year plays out the same way, those yields are going to be closing in on the 5% crossover that had BoE very nervous in January.

Do we have a stop watch on Trump screaming for interest rate cuts?

This is very grave and will affect a lot of students and make Harvard a far worse university. This comes as a further assault, in the war against Academia. So far, Harvard has been one of the few universities rich enough to stand up for principles, but this will damage them a lot. Safe to say that this is an authoritarian and arbitrary use of power.

It will be days - the Treasury auctions are pushing yields higher, so the Fed is running out of options. They may be forced to increase rates in the next meeting round.

Hurricane season begins June 1, NOAA forecasting an above-average year. The clean-up from Helene is lagging terribly with FEMA all but out of the picture. If that region gets hit again, who knows what it looks like?

It’ll be the fault of Biden, Clinton, Buttigieg, woke, Bruce or Canada.

A friend of mine from university worked on the hill in the early 00s for a Republican Senator. In the aftermath of the “you’re doing a hell of a job, Brownie” Katrina fiasco, he was throw himself of a bridge level pessimistic of the Republicans’ ability to ever be trusted to be competent stewards of the government. Even then I knew our political memory was incredibly short so thought he was being ridiculous. It feels like our political memory is now down to about 12 hours though. So in a situation where bad storms this autumn have a bad FEMA response, even after Trump telling Missouri and Arkansas to go fuck themselves over their recent emergencies, it will absolutely not be his fault. It will probably be the fault of Chasten for riding on the front of Pete’s bike.

Exactly my thinking. Trump willnof course scream the reverse.

I feel I probably use the word astonishing quite a lot these days to describe this administration’s actions, but fuck me this is astonishing

Denying the enrollment of international students is awful. Applying that to existing students :worried:

Don’t forget Swift

It is absolutely awful.
To slightly lighten the mood over someting that is truly dire and awful and which will have terrible consequences for thousands of students; I cast a pox on you for daring to move past my post above. Now I will be grumpy for at least the remaining years I have left on earth; outraged at this lèse-majestÊ !

(alternatively, you don’t find me funny, which, swallows bile, I suppose I shall have to live with; some how.)

Honestly currently the biggest shithole on planet Earth. Led by King Orange Turd.

We all know the antisemitism excuse is utter bullshit. What kind of control is Project 2025 trying to gain here? Control of the curriculum? Indoctrination?

Barbie enacts policies on Twitter, using the words “suck it”. This is a minister, ladies and gentlemen. A minister in the United States of America. We are supposed, they say, to look up to this shining light on the hill.

Magnus none of this really matters alongside the end of the rule of law and ICEstapo locking up anyone (citizen or not) who they feel like or who may not be a MAGA supporter.

If they are going to pick on a uni Harvard deserves it most. They are a Zionist enclave who turnout far poorer graduates than their reputation (build largely on signing academics who have already established their reputation) implies.
