Ah, today is Apple/EU day in the Court of the Jester, was wondering who it might be today

The iPhone attack is potentially a big deal, as it is nice and clear for everyone, and they are so popular.

When the price increases 25% they should tell the world it is because of Trump’s tariffs. When Trump says make them in America, they should tell the world that America lacks the engineering know-how, quantity of qualified staff needed, and manufacturing facilities needed. When Trump says ‘well build it up’ they should tell the world that it would be easier to do that (it would still take years) if Trump would only cease and desist his attack on education, as expertise and know-how is being drained from the country with his vicious policies.

Tim Cook and Apple will do no such thing, as the board and shareholders won’t want to see such a huge company get damaged by a madman. But they are a symbolic product - most people have one and everyone knows what they are - and they could get a lot of mileage if they were willing to stand up to Trump’s ridiculous, and ever-changing, policies.

Obviously the wise play for the shareholders is for Apple to appease with a minor move to the US in some way that won’t really change much but it will be symbolic. Overall their strategy will be to try to wait it out, because the news cycle under Trump changes all the time and at present, he has just decided that he wants to have a pop at Apple.

The EU thing is definitely a response to the Greenland mining deal. The EU should reciprocate whatever tariffs Trump imposes, and target red States like a surgeon with a scalpel.

25th amendment discussions always seem hyperbolic. But we are here in large part because business leaders incorrectly assumed this nonsense was just bluster, a negotiating tactic, and he could be managed in a way to not actually do the things he said he was going to do. Given they are now coming closer and closer to realizing their mistake, there surely has to come a point where the current day Pretorian guard take matters into their hands

iPhones could be a significant marker to help sway the public, too. They are already expensive. If they are now going to be 25% more expensive, stand up and stick the blame squarely on Trump’s terrible policy.

I hope you are right with the current day Praetorian Guard. My instinct is to say potential opposition has been hollowed out so much that it will be easy for Trump to squash, and desperately hard for someone to stick their neck out in opposition.

But I still have some hope that there might be one or two grown-ups, somewhere, who might stand up to be counted at the 11th hour.

The interesting this about this is that like so much there is a kernel of truth in Trump’s rantings, but he just doesnt understand it or have any idea how to resolve it. But the reality is that for all the fawning over China’s state capacity advantage, in this specific sector much of their capacity to do this incredibly high tech quality engineering came on the back of Apple’s capital investment. China’s transition from place to get cheap shit to place to get quality complex engineered goods came largely on the back of Apple’s capital investment. It is entirely appropriate to at least be having the conversation about how the US can respond to make the environment more attractive for that money to be spent here. But of course, that is far more a case of what the next IRA looks like rather than wildly bullying sectors

No they don’t.

Apple has about 20% of the global market for phones.

Fair enough on the global stat. iPhones have almost 60% of the market in America and that’s what I had in mind, as Trump is trying to bring Apple manufacturing to America.

Still, even with the global figures they are a huge company and everyone knows what an iPhone is. If the price of an iPhone went up 25% in America because of Trump’s tariff, it could be a bellwether sort of a fight that could have wider repercussions in reining Trump in.

Aye. When I look around it is slim pickings!

My kingdom for a statesman!

Individual representatives of states may say some mollifying words to Besset and his cohort for diplomatic reasons, but I am rather sure most are very happy that the negotiations are being done on a Suprastate level. It is after all, one of the main benefits of being in the EU that most EU skeptics acknowledge.

Just here in the news: There are currently 550 German students enrolled at Harvard who now either have to transfer or lose their visa.
They are now totally up in the air as we say.
