Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2)

Well, it is not illegal to amend a constitution (which the US should have done several times in the past for completely different reasons). So if they vote for giving Satan more terms, then it’s legal enough.
Democracy only works if people support it. It is easy enough to abolish (not thinking of giving a president 3 terms, that is in itself fairly unproblematic; but the person they are doing it for is not) if you have the votes.

Any mention of the word TACO, certainly looks as though it gets under the ‘Orange Peel’ skin of the Ogre. Might even be worth inserting into any future thread title changes :0)

Bongino looks like one of those depictions of humanoid robots in films where only the front half of their head is supposed to appear humanlike

If they hasn’t already dealt an enormous blow the our R&D sector this would cut it legs out just by itself. People outside of academia just really do not seem to understand how much of our science is driven by the cheap labor of talented Indian and Chinese students willing to put in 100 hour weeks for 4-5 years at a salary that would be bad pay if you were using 40 hours a week to calculate their hourly wage. Being a PhD student in the sciences isn’t about sitting in a classroom or going to the library to study. It is about doing a 40 hour week in a lab and then doing another one on top of that.

CBS is under intense scrutiny after reportedly agreeing to pay Donald Trump a massive sum to drop his lawsuit over an edited Kamala Harris interview. While the exact figure is still being negotiated, with offers ranging from fifteen to fifty million, the pressure to settle is coming from the top, as CBS’s parent company Paramount seeks approval from the Trump administration for a lucrative merger. This payout follows a disturbing pattern: Disney, which owns ABC News, already paid Trump sixteen million to avoid a similar lawsuit, and Meta also settled with him for over ten million. These settlements are happening even as legal experts widely dismiss Trump’s claims as meritless and a threat to press freedom.

Inside CBS, the mood is tense and demoralized. Respected leaders like Wendy McMahon and Bill Owens have resigned rather than cave to Trump’s demands, insisting that CBS did nothing wrong and that giving in would undermine journalistic independence. Yet, corporate interests are clearly taking precedence over editorial integrity, with executives fearing Trump’s FCC could block their business deals if they do not comply.

This is not just about CBS. Trump’s aggressive lawsuits and intimidation tactics are chilling free speech across the media landscape. Major outlets and tech companies are paying him off, setting a dangerous precedent that could embolden future attacks on the press and erode the First Amendment. Instead of standing up to this bullying, media conglomerates are choosing profit and regulatory approval over the public’s right to honest reporting.

This is enough for an actual scientist to be blacklisted if they published something with fake references. This is from a select commission of the entire department of Health and Human Services, under which scientific agencies like the NIH, CDC, and FDA exist.

MAGA ‘more troubling’ as Trump’s ‘mental decline becomes more obvious’: reporter

Story by Tom Boggioni

Longtime White House reporter Brian Karem is suggesting that, as disturbing as Donald Trump’s mental decline has become more apparent during his second term, what is even more dangerous are the people who support him and defend despite evidence that he is giving signs that he is slipping.

In his column for Salon, Karem wrote that the president had another temper tantrum during his press availability on Wednesday when he was asked about Wall Street using “Trump Always Chickens Out” (TACO) as shorthand for betting on the market after his tariff pronouncements.

That, in turn, led the president to shoot back, "Don’t ever say what you said. That’s a nasty question,” which left many attending “not overly impressed” by his outburst because they have become accustomed to his decline, leading one pool reporter to comment, “I really think he lost it a long time ago.”

However, many die-hard Trump insiders are not as inclined to get out before things grow worse, he wrote.

Calling them a “traveling crew of sycophants who hang on his every word in order to feed their empty souls,” he added, "This soulless group of feckless individuals consists of racists, misogynists, bed wetters, train spotters, and a guy who once painted his bald head to make it look like he had hair."

Writing that Trump’s MAGA horde has raised his status to “mythical” proportions, Karem asserted they are a greater threat than Trump’s growing mental slippage.

“This is more troubling as Trump’s mental decline becomes more obvious,” he wrote before observing, “If Joe Biden slipped into senility, Donald Trump has fallen precipitously into it.”

Adding that Trump now seems to wholeheartedly believe all of his own lies, Karem concluded, “Donald Trump is an angry old man at war with everything in his life, including the reality he can’t accept and his greatest fans will never admit: Donald Trump is the ultimate loser. He is a shriveled husk devoid of empathy.”

‘Not sure how to process it’: Whitmer accuses Trump of lying to her face

Story by Carl Gibson

U.S. President Donald Trump is greeted by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, as he arrives at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, Michigan, U.S., April 29, 2025.

When President Donald Trump asked Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) her thoughts on pardoning Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox – the men accused of scheming to kidnap her — she made it clear she wouldn’t like it. And Trump changed the subject.

Whitmer thought that was the end of the conversation until recently, when Trump said he was looking into the potential pardons of two men in prison for the kidnapping plot. That’s according to a recent Detroit News report, in which Whitmer said she was caught off-guard by this week’s news of the possible pardons.

“I’ll be honest with you,” Whitmer said during a Thursday interview with the Michigan Public Radio Network. “I talked to the president about a month ago, and he asked me how I’d feel about this, and I said, ‘I think it would be the wrong decision, I would oppose it.’ And he said, ‘OK, I’ll drop it.’ Now we see this revelation. So, I’m not sure how to process it.”

Croft Jr., who is 49, and Fox, who is 42, were convicted in a 2020 trial of conspiracy to kidnap Whitmer in response to her Covid-19 pandemic policies aimed at containing the virus. The men had hatched a plot to overwhelm the governor’s security detail at her summer home on Mackinac Island and abscond with her, and even apparently contemplated detonating a bomb under a highway overpass. Croft Jr. was sentenced to more than 19 years for the plot, while Fox was given a 16-year sentence. Trump referred to their prosecution as a “railroad job” in which the men were punished for saying “stupid things.”

The two-term Michigan governor’s comments are particularly noteworthy given that she was quick to condemn the attempt on Trump’s life during a July 2024 rally in Pennsylvania, in which a gunman with a scoped rifle took several shots at Trump while he was speaking onstage. The Detroit News reported that Whitmer was one of the first prominent Democrats to denounce the assassination attempt.

“I think anything short of condemning political violence does a disservice to everyone,” Whitmer said at the time.

Trump’s pardons of far-right activists and loyal supporters have been more frequent during his second term, starting with his mass pardons of approximately 1,500 defendants involved in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Ed Martin — who was interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia – is now the Department of Justice’s pardon attorney, and has announced a “no MAGA left behind” policy that prioritizes freeing Trump’s most loyal supporters

This was evident a long time ago, but somehow it was only ever Biden’s mental capacity that was an issue?
