Yeah, there is coverage of one of the Ministers who was there saying it was clearly a joke. But that in itself conveys (probably deliberately) a lack of respect for Trudeau, so it is still damaging. Notably, Poilievre has kept every quiet about it, because his current weakness is that he would be perceived as a Yankee lapdog.
At some point, the MAGA clowns who do seem to love the 51st state idea will realize a few points:
i) Even if Canada was made into a 2nd California, those electoral districts would swing the balance of the Electoral College by about 8%, assuming our Blue areas translate into their Red areas. We are almost all commies by their standards.
ii) No way that would be workable, regionalism is a defining characteristic of Canada, no way a state government could manage that.
iii) Although it appears to be perfectly acceptable to send an Ambassador to France who cannot speak French, Quebec has an expectation of government in French.
