Years ago, I did some work on a proposed consolidation transaction between BP and Exxon around the Prudhoe fields in Alaska. Essentially, an Exxon field was going to be moved into the asset group managed by BP (in a partnership with Exxon and ConocoPhillips) and a valuation was needed. One of the anticipated costs was making the existing distribution/collection pipe network compatible with BP’s, with a specific concern being some of the support structures. BP was already building anticipating the softening of the (permafrost) ground due to climate change, and did not have a denialist position. By contrast, Exxon was devoutly stating that it was a hoax.
Remarkably, the pipelines did not need any additional support, they were built to the same standard.

Yeah, I mean, I have lost the ability to be shocked or surprised, but I must say that what Witkoff says there is actually special. It is how one would speak, if one was embellishing, to a king ordained by god from the Ancien Regime. But even some of those god kings in history would find that a bit too much (maybe not in public, but privately to their confidantes).

You can find MAGA comments praising Trump for working so much harder than Biden because he has been holding Cabinet meetings at higher rate than Biden. But Biden’s Cabinet meetings were serious affairs and largely held for significant matters and discussion of national interest. One could not imagine televising them. Trump’s are ridiculous, they really are skits.

Its exactly the same with the press engagement. One day last week Trump did 3 separate press conferences. The people who complained about Biden’s lack of public access present it as an improvement. Despite the only thing to take from any Trump’s appearances being the subtext…the things he says only matter in what they reveal under the surface…or even how little actual work is being done that the president has that much time to engage the press.

Normally, during normal times; people would talk about how offensive and disrespectful it is that Witkoff says this without having checked the background of all the other historical candidates.
An anecdote, but I was furious when Thorbjørn Jagland gave Obama the prize on the basis of hope, as it became deevaluated (because it was all mostly Jagland, he alone argued fiercly for it, and he has never recovered from it, as Norwegians don’t let him forget what a mistake it was) extraordinarily foolishly gave Obama the peace prize just because he was not Bush (who was looked at as a so dangerous menace for international security, that parts of the then comitte, made the fundamental cardinal sin of giving the other guy, who argued for another direction in regards of military intervention compared to Bush, the prize for simply arguing for another course and not escalating with attacking Iran etc.)
We pay the prize of the undeserved Obama prize now dearly, when the US has a narcisistic megalomania-suffering sociopath on the throne. Because Trump is sickly obsesed with his predecessors, particularly Obama.

It’s the natural resources and for Trump, @odin_telamon is totally right that perception of greatness plays a disproportionally large role. But those behind the idea (this isn’t entirely new in certain nationalistically inclined academic circles in the US, Trump is just the one to completely and utterly run with it as policy), they want it for the resources and control of sea lanes.
An argument that they use often as a substitute motive, is security (ballistic missile defence often mentioned by such dishonest people, and by the stupid ones, Chinese military intervention) and China. But the US has military basing rights on Greenland and is a NATO pact ally of Denmark, so that is just indeed a substitute motive for the ignorant rubes.
