What can people do to put pressure to boycott the World Cup matches in the US?
Can the US matches be shifted to Canada and Mexico?
Putting pressure on the sponsors might help.
I assume it is too late to cancel the World Cup.
out of interestā¦
juts how do you safely transfer £122 billion worth of gold from the US back to Germany?
Iām guessing its done in stages?
FIFA wonāt do that, although there is precedent as the 1986 competition was moved from Colombia to Mexico.
Iām assuming that the contracts will have a force majeure clause. Whether the insurance companies would pay out is another matter. They would be arguing whether the safety of players and fans would be compromised.
Lots of stages. Also guessing. Over 1200 tonnes is not insignificant. Quite something to see it.
āWir werden ein grƶĆeres Boot brauchen!ā
Took them 4 years to transfer a mere 300 tons from the US (and a similar amount from France). Hereās the report from the Bundesbank in 2017 for anyone whoās interested.
It appears that a few in Germany are thinking about it at least

One of the worst aspects of the shooting is there is almost 360 footage from half a dozen different people, yet all the key people have the audacity to categorically lie. Blaming the victim, describing him as a terrorist, threatening with a weapon, intent on killing law enforcement.
Thatās the really dangerous aspect to all this. Reality no longer matters. No accountability, no respect to basic right and wrong (let alone laws).
Any other civilised country, those responsible would already have been arrested.
Reality has been treated like a subject of partisan discussion for years in the US.
Even ātraditionalā media has played a part in that, let alone social media and certain political actors themselves obviously. Basically he said/she said, job done, next issue.
āThe Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.ā
George Orwell, 1984
I keep coming back to that quote. I always imagined that when he wrote it, he was thinking that a leadership can create their own narrative without documentary proof, but here we are.
Itās no coincidence that the first thing they attack is the independent media.
I learned today itās called Belief Perseverance, where you saturate the media space before people see, hear the actual truth. Authoritarianism 101.
Whereās that Orwell quote again. Darn it @RedWhippet beat me
Itās not just the US though, is it? It seems to have become the prevalent school of journalism. Just look at the BBC.
There is sustained pressure on the yield right now. That is true for many bonds, but especially US Treasuries. I suspect there are a lot of non-US entities steadily unwinding their positions. The regular upward pressure on gold in North American trading hours also suggests American investors doing the same.
This may well be a crisis for the US as soon as April. Their 30 year bonds have a higher yield than the 10, and the percentage of their debt in 1 year or less paper is at the highest it has been since 2008. They may end up having to roll over 10% of their total debt in just a couple of months in a market where no one wants their paper.
This admission should be utterly disqualifying of her ever being taken seriously again. They laid it all out during the campaign. They wrote a fucking book about it and all the people who wrote the book kept saying publicly āweāre going to totally project 2026 the fuck out of this countryā. But there is a bias in this country, seemingly even among the press, that the things the republicans clearly want to do are so bad that normies donāt believe the suggestion is real and so instead people act like there is a moderate take for their goals and directions.

EDIT: Should be noted she was head of the Washington Post through most of the campaign season. There was probably no one more important in news in the US during the season of ālets find out what Project 2025 isā season than her.
LOL this is the epitome of YOU HAD ONE JOB.
Just a comment on boycotting the World Cup. In many ways there is just cause, but I donāt see the stomach for it. At least not officially. Consider the last two World Cups. 2022 Qatar, how many died to build those stadiums? How free and fair is the country for people of all backgrounds? 2018 Russia. They had annexed Crimea at that stage. Putin had been executing opponents and sending hitmen to do it on foreign soil, and so on and so forth.
What is happening with ICE is awful, and Trump is lawless. In a different world I could see a formal boycott of the World Cup, but if there was no stomach for it for either Qatar or Russia, Iād be surprised if there was for this one.
Mind you, individual fans have the option of voting with their own two feet.
Iām not sure whether there was a direct threat to visiting fans or players. Although much of that will have been those potentially affected staying away or keeping a low profile (LGBT+ fans).
The players could boycott it. Maybe they should be the ones to show some steel?
