Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

In the Eastern Canada market, paid sales are far in excess of bums in seats. Theatres are essentially being paid to screen it to all-but empty houses

Man City bosses in Abu Dhabi bought up the tickets to make it look like it is doing well. Oops, wrong thread!

It really hasn’t. The officially quoted figures are $7 million in the United States and Canada, and $78,002 in other territories.

I was listening to a podcast from a journalist who saw it, and she said that the theatre was full, but it was all journalists. i.e. people who were paid to be there. There is no telling how many people have actually paid themselves to see it. I suspect a fair few tickets will have been given away to boost numbers, but apparently only in the US.

They have spent $35 million promoting the film. That is an insane amount of money for a documentary. I do go to the cinema to watch documentaries, and typically they will trail around the art-house circuit rather than have a big launch. They can be busy if the film-maker is there to do a Q&A afterwards, but typically they will be marketed to the likes of me - a listing in the season’s programme and maybe a mention on an email. Usually, they will make their money back by selling them on to broadcasters (BBC, PBS, ARD, Netflix or whoever).

What I don’t understand is why they booked so many screens in the UK for it. Apparently, they took Ā£32,974, which is paltry even for an independent film. By comparison, the other new released independent films which have surpassed it are all foreign language films with a fraction of the screens and a tiny amount of promotion.

I wonder if Cynicaloldgit has seen it? He was an avid cinema goer and would often report back ā€œDon’t botherā€.

Watch yourself. Someone is bound to now seek your painful demise because you didn’t speak of him with loathing.

I think I’m in the clear suggesting Melania was something he might watch.

I fully expect to be haunted by him for making the suggestion

They are beginning to put this out there…!!!

ā€œWe’re not gonna sit here and allow you to steal the country again. And you can whine and cry and throw your toys out of the pram all you want, but we will never again allow an election to be stolen.ā€ Steve Bannon just said the quiet part very, very loud.

It’s impossible to imagine there being another free and fair election in the US for the foreseeable future.
It’s amazing that people still think otherwise.

A Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Minneapolis is really a recognition of people power and it’s the first time a whole city has been put forward for the prize.

It reflects a community that has organized, protested peacefully, supported one another, and refused to stay silent when human rights, and civil liberties were at risk. That kind of civic engagement is what nonviolent resistance looks like in practice.

This isn’t about awards it’s about the idea that ordinary people, standing together, can push back against fear, defend their neighbors, and demand accountability from those in power. That’s how democratic values stay alive!

True as well, according to Snopes:

Maybe Donald will give Minneapolis his FIFA peace prize?

Whilst at it, he could also invite the city to join his Board of Peace

I was sort of curious if there is any cinema who would dare to show that movie in Cologne. Was kinda proud when I got this:

Apparently only the biggest one had originally planned on showing it, but immediately took it out after only 4 tickets had been pre-sold and there had been backlash.

I think what surprises me is that this doesn’t even seem to have a car crash following. I remember when the ā€œCatsā€ film came out a few years ago, there were quite a few people who watched it just to see if it was as bad as everyone says. (It was - just because you can do something in CGI doesn’t mean you should.) I saw a report that Melania was on in Hamburg and just one couple went in out of morbid curiosity.

I suspect that there are some patriots in the US who will have gone out to watch it through genuine interest, but I have no idea why they are promoting it overseas. It’s just setting themselves up for humiliation.
