I’d just watched the Noem Senate hearing before the news. I imagine the final straw for Trump was when she was asked ; “Have you had sexual relations with Corey Lewandowski ?” (And refused to answer.)

The fact stories were circulating during the week about DoJ’s efforts to ensure their people could not be subject to bar investigations is Im sure totally a coincidence
Ben Rhodes was raising this only a few days before the missiles started. He read off a list of credentials of the people they had involved in the negotiations that led to the JCPOA and it was Nobel prize winning nuclear physicists and career diplomats. He made the point that even if Trump’s group had the best intentions there was the potential to accidentally get us into a war due to the inability to understand the implications of any of Iran’s positions on enrichment.

I will also note a point some might miss that Hegseth ranted about in his Hitler speech. Not only are the objectives obviously the vaguest ever in recent history, but US capabilities in the theatre are not overwhelming (in a way that can force an end to the war very rapidly).
50 000 trooops they say. Most of them are not infantry or cavalry. There is almost none of that. Ergo, no army is poised to invade to force a fast end to it.
Their strategy is “Hope” that Iran are “sensible” and transactional and so capitulates without being forced to do so by getting invaded. Untill then, bombs will continue.
For sure, US will win the war, almost certainly. But it’s likely not going to be fast. And of course, the war is now regional, triggering invasion of lebanon, possible occupation of half that country and much, much more. Oil prices will soon spiral out of control, economies will struggle. Swans are born.
