Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

Sure, but the Kaiserreich did not have to lead to Hitler. If you want to draw direct links, you must probably draw them to Prussia and it’s military culture too. But I agree.

But I still don’t understand how anyone can argue that “nothing has changed in the US” like we saw above, since it is factually wrong and much too simplistic.

Following the threads is what we do in history, but saying something is connected, which it of course always is and it is as you say incredibly important to understand every single underlaying cause (which I have often argued previously in this very thread regarding Tea Party and much more), is hardly the same and does not justify the claim that “US didn’t really change with Trump”, like we saw above in this thread and which I reacted to.

That is my argument anyway. Maybe you agree, maybe you disagree.

Yes, agree.

Depleted uranium shells by NATO ?

It’s amusing, for I tend to defend ordinary German nazis sometimes in debates, arguing that following that wave in national euphoria, is psychologically so much easier than doing the opposite. And the 30s was a better time for many Germans, both economically and for the sense of pride etc. I tend to get shouted down.

To be frank, I am ok with your argument, but only if you would admit that Americans have far less reason for following the wave than Germans did. For they did not experience traumatising defeat, they did not experience hopeless inflation and so much more. Yet they do flock to Trump and voted him in for the second time.

Just food for thought, which I mention, because usually, I see many of the same people who would defend Trump, blanket condemning German “soft-nazis” (i.e. not the true believers) as “monsters”. But there are no monsters in this world.

Personally, I blame Americans far more than the average German in the late 30s…

What about them ?

What does anti armour shells have to do with an intervention being positive or negative politically on a macro scale ?

It’s not a serious argument, other than yes, the use of depleted uranium in ammunition has been controversial. But very much besides the point, I hope you agree.

I agree with all of that. Excellent post.

I think fixing American democracy will be a hell of a task, and one that is quite possibly beyond the general population at this stage. Not because there aren’t many millions who want to fix it, but because I’m wondering if we are in a post-democracy age, and we are trying to fix something with tools from yesterday.

The broken information system (lies and propaganda) and the overwhelming media diet that people consume, from all angles, fed to them by bad faith actors; makes me wonder about whether or not democracy here is fixable.

The game has probably changed, as America seems more and more like an oligarchy than a democracy. Can normal everyday citizens confront and overturn that via the main tool at their disposal? i.e. the ballot box.

Some would say we might already be beyond the point of no return, and free and fair elections might be a thing of the past. For me it is borderline, and the next one, or possibly two elections will answer that question.

As for America’s global power for decades to come, I think we are well on the way to the Chinese age. Things don’t change overnight, but China has been on an irresistible rise for a few decades now. It has mostly been economic, but militarily it has grown a lot too. As American leadership shows how dishonorable and unreliable it is, untold amounts of soft power erodes, and China will benefit from that. Again, it won’t all happen in one fell swoop, but there will be catalyst moments, and Trump’s attack on Iran will be one of them.

Still, as the phrase goes, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time…

The November midterms might be one of the last opportunities to strike a blow that would help tilt the balance toward removing the current lot.

It won’t change the underlying problems, but it would be a start.

Since we are moving into territory were we shift goal posts from has “US intervention apart from Korea ever been positive” to questions about depleted uranium being used in shells, I might as well post this high quality article:

https://mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/news/1901564/

Back in their day, the Nazis came up with the idea of using depleted uranium as an armour-piercing weapon. Facing a shortage of wolframite after its imports were cut off, the German Reich Minister of Armaments and War Production Albert Speer issued an order to use depleted uranium instead.

At the time, the danger of uranium as a weapon was not obvious, and all the data to this effect was viewed as controversial until the 1990s, when NATO troops employed depleted uranium munitions during their aggression against Yugoslavia in what turned out to be a horrific experiment. It demonstrated the actual consequences of its use for actual living beings.

In 2015-2017, the parliament of Italy, whose forces made the most active use of depleted uranium munitions during NATO’s aggression in the Balkans, released a 252-page report on the consequences of exposure to depleted uranium and radioactive thorium for the service personnel of the Italian Armed Forces. According to the study commissioned by the parliamentary commission, cancer rates increased several fold in places where depleted uranium munitions were used. Reports containing precise data on Italian military personnel who used depleted uranium munitions were also made public. Of the 7,500 people exposed to toxic substances and radiation, 372 died, which amounts to a mortality rate of 5 percent, or one in 20 people. It has to be noted that these people died painful deaths succumbing to renal dysfunction, lung cancer, bone marrow cancer, oesophageal cancer, degenerative skin disorders, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or leukaemia.

Russia warned people in Ukraine about this threat many times, but unfortunately it is about to materialise on the Ukrainian territory too. British and American supplies of radioactive and highly toxic depleted uranium munitions are turning Ukraine into a territory that is unsuitable for living. The radioactive contamination of soil is already underway, and there is objective data to this effect.

Here are the indicator for Ukraine’s Khmelnitsky Region. There was a substantial surge in radiation reported in May with indicators increasing from 80 nanosieverts all the way up to 140-160 nanosieverts.

A similar spike in radiation was also reported around the same time in Poland’s eastern regions. In both cases, the explosion of depleted uranium munitions at a storage facility in Khmelnitsky was probably what caused the spikes.

In May, the local authorities even issued alerts containing guidelines on what to do in case radioactivity levels increase.

Radioactivity levels dropped within a month, but this was still a classical fallout as gravitation forced radioactive particles down on the ground.

It seems that all soil under the cloud that rose from the storage facility and the surrounding territories were exposed to radionuclides. Rehabilitating the soils will be a painstaking, lengthy, and costly undertaking.

Every warehouse with depleted uranium munitions and every tank carrying them can potentially lead to a surge in cancer rates, leaving behind deadly and toxic soils, and posing a mortal danger for all living being.

Ukrainians must understand that the UK supplies them with a true poison, since there will be no getting away from tumours, and demand that depleted uranium munitions be shipped out of the country as quickly as possible.

In short, it is called Whataboutism and I have never liked it.

What?
So because of ineptness and corruption the answer is vote for incompetence and end of rule of law which leads to no more corruption as there’s no more lines to break let alone blur.

No, surely not?

I understand where your coming from I just can not believe it. I mean it’s so far from what actually happened. Of course I haven’t a clue what happened in India but I suspect it’s similar to what’s been happening in France.

Rule of law has to be re-established 1st. This will require a constitution.

Exhibit A in establishing the rule of law is Donald Trump. Is he above the law? Can he do whatever he likes?

Unfortunately, the answer appears to be yes.

The midterms, if they go against Trump as expected, might see Congress change, which will be a basic prerequisite for the possibility of holding Trump to account.

Edit:
I would love it if Iran somehow managed to hack the full and unredacted Epstein files, and gifted them to the world.

The cursed United States has today given Ukraine an ultimatum. Full withdrawal from all of Donbas now, or there will not be Security Guarantees (that most people think is worthless).
Zelensky is in an extremely difficult position. It will take Russia more than a year to conquer all of Donbas, at least. Defences there are very solid. The US demands that Ukraine vacates the trenches.

The U.S. Said It Helped Bomb a Drug Camp. It Was a Dairy Farm.

The Times visited a village where the United States and Ecuador said they destroyed an armed group’s training camp. Residents said it was actually a dairy farm.

Imagine the damage cows could do if they took to the air, shit everywhere.

He’ll stick to his guns. Literally and figuratively. There aren’t really words for this betrayal and payment will become due for it somewhere down the line. Russia aren’t going to conquer the Donbass in even a year, I doubt. Zelensky has to keep fighting until America wakes from the fever dream they’re currently in and until then, you guys in Europe have the ball.

That said, look for a world shaking crisis at roughly a month before the American mid-term elections.
