Google Maps shows the Gulf of Mexico and now Lake Ontario based on where you log in from, though I notice that the Gulf now has Gulf of America in brackets.
Maybe the Canadians should start boycotting Google. Itâs not that they canât do without it.
Google displays locations to US users based on official US naming conventions. It will have other criteria for deciding what to show users in other countries that wonât be impacted by Trump signing an official government order so will not change

It still shows Lake Ontario, but has Lake America in a paranthesis, at least on my phone.

Actually, it is very, very complicated boycotting American technology giants. It really, really is. Incidentally, i just took a course last year in Information Literacy where the curiculum and the professors stressed how obscenely expensive and difficult it was for the EU to do so. And then it is even worse for Canada. This is the critical advantage of the United States, the tech companies and IT. Itâs extremely hard to disconnect from it since there is no good alternative (China isnât the good alternative).
There simply is no Western alternative and itâs a serious problem for the EU, and then I expect Canada too, in their relationship with the US. This industry is strategic and related to security as well, and we are totally reliant on the US andâs itâs a big, big problem.
Yes, boycotting google or amazon isnt as simple as using a different search engine/browser or cancelling prime. The tentacles these companies have running through the very foundations of the system that any âindependentâ tech product would run on.
One of our marketing people once made the claim she was boycotting Amazon by cancelling prime. Our CTO, probably quite unprofessionally just laughed and said âyour salary comes from a product that lives in Amazonâ and we then had to a conversation about what AWS is.
Who knows if this is important (becomes policy related) or not ? No one can know for sure, so I am posting this latest anti-Canada rant.

Amusing example of that over tbe weekend. Several Ontario Crown corporations use a mapping service fot their websites that uses US Google data. Ontarioâs premier Ford has been the most bombastic publuc figure in attacking Trump, yet the provincial electrical transmission and distribution utility has a website showing Lake America.
It is indeed quite difficult to break away from Google and AWS, but I think that highlights where Trump is doing enormous long term damage. As non-US standards and platforms become available, those customers for US technology simply disappear, and they wonât be back after the midterms or the next presidential election. There are simply too many one time costs involved

Iâm posting this because I currently associate it somehow with our transfer window. 
But we have no alternative to GPS. That is one of the main issues imo. Space coverage. The EU and Canada are so far behind in actual coverage. And that is a strategic conundrum. And then we have Google, omnipresent in your stateâs public systems.
AWS is at least as entrenched in the public sector, but yes, it is not an easy process at all. In Canada, we have far fewer options than in Europe (silly example - toothpaste. No mass market domestic manufacture, most brands are American.)
