I dont fully agree with the Garland bit as I think people overlook a significant part of what he was doing prior to appointing Smith. But yeah, the insistence that new administrations need to look forward, and the insistence on treating accountability as partisan weaponization of government is a large part of how we got something as damaging as Trump. And his ability to weaponize government to partisan ends and it not get the reaction is warrants

NIH will always promote their priorities based on what they are willing to fund. When I first got to grad school in 2000 we were entering an era that exercise related projects would only receive funding if they included an element of genetic differences in response and or addressed questions of why people donât exercise as much as they know they should and how to improve that.
But to cancel existing grants because a shift in priorities is diabolical. This is not policy, this is punishment for people who werenât preemptively interested in the things the administration is focused on. And thatâs without even talking about how ducking stupid the priority pivot is
