I don’t really understand why you even doubt this tbh. It is not as if we don’t know this kind of discourse goes on in some US universities. It would be far more surprising if this was misinformation, given he also posts an example of a quite recent study from that Uni as well, as an example. And let me remind you, normal people, without paying (usually), do not have access to research articles from these data bases ( I know, since I have trawled such data bases in my studies, and they tend to require subscription).

Anyway, I posted the above more as a “look at this counterproductive stuff”, not because I was “outraged” ( I literally wrote in my original post above that I was not outraged), and I didn’t think it would provoke a long debate about the verification of the information. I am not THAT interested in this stuff. Literally, as I have said, I dislike even reading about Culture War issues and think it a pest mostly (at least the US hyper polarised one).

So I hope we won’t debate this for many more posts, mate. I prefer we talk about something more interesting :slight_smile:

It is a style guide for writing. You can still think it is silliness, but it is not a directive for how doctors should talk to patients. As you can see in the later example, this is not something specific by UPenn, but a guidance to bring their scientific writing in line with preferred practice from a reputable medical journal.

Medical writing is rightly concerned with precision and the avoidance of ambiguity and so conventions change over time as common understanding of an issue evolve such that the current language conventions leave open room for misunderstandings. It is a standard part of being in this field that every such change results in rounds of “oh my god this is so silly” before it becomes second nature. This is a field where tomes have been written on the preferred use of participant vs subject vs patient in clinical trials and other human research, and it seems silly from the outside but exists because the debate is actually relevant to the people in the weeds doing the work.

The truly appalling thing about this is that the line that must not be crossed is not Russians causing untold civilian death, but Ukraine being a secondary influence on the price of diesel for American consumers. The fact that Americans are not in fact outraged by this shows how badly the cancer of cultural narcissism has metastasized. There was a time 90 years when Americans were deeply troubled by the Japanese disregard for civilians in China, when there was far less visual evidence available.

Does that ever happen en masse in the US though without the population already having a negative opinion about the perpetrator and being primed to be appalled by the things they are doing? Something that they ignore if done by anyone else? I guess the issue is maybe not an increase in cultural narcisism but an evolution how much Trump has shifted so much of the country on whether Russia are the good guys. There was obviously a big degree of tongue in cheek meant with the “I’d rather be russian than a democrat” t shirts that started being worn early in Trump V1, but you can only pretend to think Russia are our allies for so long before you believe it.

Right. First of all, as I have tried to show in the past, I have the greatest respect for you as a person, as well as your knowledge.

But I honestly don’t understand what it is you are trying to correct here. I apologice for just writing guidance and not style guidance, but thought it was a bit obvious that I refered to style guidance given the context. So with respect, I do not understand this “correction”, and honestly find it disapppointing that you thought I did not understand what I myself posted. But I suppose I can look like an idiot when I have so many grammar errors in my writing. I am actually relatively well read though, despite shabby writing.

My point stands. This is not normative outside select US mileus and it is a gift to MAGA. Perhaps you are right and idiotic (imo) terms like “birthing persons” will eventually also be used in Europe, but for now, most European intellectuals will probably roll their eyes at this, just like professor Aavitsland did.

There are indicators that Russia is mulling a “green zone” (i.e. proposing areas in Russia and Ukraine where economic infrastructure will not be bombed), due to wounds from Ukrainian attacks. There is such discourse in Russia, though it is unknown if Kreml figures shares such thoughts.

But at the same time, this, what Trump claims, goes contrary to Russian interests and overall strategy in 2025-2026; which is to destroy the Ukraining state and cause mass refugees floods (I am worried about the winter), which is seemingly about to happen (but the media barely mentions it or are unaware).
This strategy is for instance seen in methodical targeting of pharmacies (i.e, this de facto forces civilians to flee and is cheaper politically than methodically bombing all clinics and hospitals, which they of course want to do if politically possible).
The fact is, Russian attacks on Ukrainian economic and health sectors, is far more grievious than Ukrainian attacks on Russian economic targets. It is very doubtful if there will be electricity in Ukraine in Janurary and February, that is how devastating Russian methodology actually is. And remember, this is not Syria or Palestine. A Ukrainian winter is devastating and have many days with -20 degrees celsius or worse, in parts of the country.

So yes, I don’t believe this and if it is factual, it would be temporary at best.

Side note: But some people (often educated ones as well), can sometimes be heard claiming that targeting civilians is ineffective militarily. This is false. It is categorically false. It can be ineffective if the strategy is to break the will (i.e. rally around the flag effect). However, when used as strategy and with a clear methodology (such as methodical removal of infrastructure critical to life), it is extremely effective and this is incidentally one of Russia’s advantages over the West and NATO in a theorethical war too.

To be fair, it was not long ago that Russia did not import diesel, and they have been. But the driver of rising prices is absolutely the conflict with Iran.

But my response was based on the fact that your commentary on this, included factual misstatements. Most specifically the specific comment of yours that I directly quoted and commented on in my last post.

Further to that though, I think you misunderstand the scope of this. This is not some issue of American Universities doing dumb culture war shit. The journal article cited in the tweet you shared is one from an Australian group, published in a British journal, owned by a German publishing company. This reflects an evolution of language in biomedicine in general, as used in a specific niche field for a niche audience used to technical language. To this point, a quick google of Biomed Central’s guidance on this it encourages authors to follow the SAGER guidelines on issues of sex and gender, guidance written by the European Association of Science Editors. SAGER guidance does require them to use this terminology, and even if it did it doesnt seem BioMed Central would require the authors to, but it is consistent with the framework and overall guidance. And the institutions involved should demonstrate the that this is not some American woke thing

You are correct, I did indeed misunderstand the scope of this. I also suppose my intepretation of said text box, can indeed be construed as misinformation (though I kind of assumed that the text box was visible). I completely lack expertise in this field in any case, so should be more carereful.

In any case, I did google Birthing Person an hour ago, and found it was a topic of debate in 2023; so yes, hardly recent either. Not that I personally approve of the word, but as you say, that is not very relevant.
