Essentially, European nations are dependent on the US. Not so much from a military perspective, but because they are dependent on American firms.
Most computer systems are dependent in some way on a US technology stack. The US government has shown that it is willing to weaponise this; just see what they have done to the ICC because Trump has had a toddler tantrum.
The effect long term is that Europe will move away from the US, but in the short term they are being squeezed by the balls over it.
My answer is the same as @RedWhippetâs below.
Though I would also probably add the âmilitary perspectiveâ, since there are glaring holes in European security if you remove the USA from the equation, since the US has almost monopoly on certain very important categories of weapons you unfortunately need, as well as industrial capacity and intelligence (space, space, space; they are so far ahead in space).
But Dependence like our favorite hound says (hardly an insult to you, Limiescouse, but for some reason, I refuse to call that dog on your avatar for a âhoundâ ).
The fact of the matter is, European powers are too weak to offer Ukraine this, because we do not have it ourselves and we are dependent on the USA even today and will be in the coming years too (hopefully not medium term, but short term, next 10 years ? Yes). I could use another word than weakness, but I donât like beating around the bush. It is a grave weakness. Far worse than most people think or understand. https://x.com/RALee85/status/2108885771872620825
I got a cheque for $2,000 from Donald Trump this past week. His name was on it. I didnât know anything about it and it arrived out of the blue. It said it was a payment for overpaying for health insurance via The Affordable Care Act, Obamacare.
Health insurance costs are indeed a disgrace, and I donât dispute that I have paid far too much over the years, and thankfully we switched to insurance provided via Mrs ROTWâs work a couple of months ago, and it is much better.
Still, I didnât know they were going to do this and Trump appears to be trying to buy himself some favor coming up to the midterms.
What would you do with the dough? Itâs funny money, tainted, but still something useful could be done, so I deposited it and donated the amount to a local food pantry.
âŚhe is a crap story teller though⌠talk about getting ya onto the edge of your seat before shutting down before the ending⌠what has happened to injured goose that caught all our attention..??
The person I have to wonder about is Modi. Modi was apparently absolutely blasted by Trump for buying Iranian oil, having also faced considerable pressure to stop buying Russian oil themselves. I doubt there are many countries that in aggregate have endured more economic hardship than India (some more per capita, but India would be up there, and obviously a huge population). Now, suddenly when Americans are discomforted by paying a price for diesel that is still below the pre-Hormuz price seen in most of the developed world, Trump flips in hopes of saving the GOP position.
Why would anyone now take American economic sanctions seriously, unless absolutely compelled to do so?
Essentially, one of the few good things Trump did, imo, was punishing India (but for the very wrong reasons).
That doesnât mean I donât think your post is high quality. They always, always are. I just donât care about Modi being humiliated and wouldnât mind seeing more.
