Sad for Trent. Happy for Liverpool. Couldn’t care less about England.
Southgate is a stout coach, sees the game in straight lines, safety first, and with the crap central defenders he picks - Harry Maguire we are looking at you - then yes, it does need someone like Walker to his right, to basically do his job for him and give some insurance.
As everyone can see, England can’t buy a goal. One of the most creative players is a fullback, and he can make stuff happen. He weighs in with Prem goals, but his assists record is off the charts for the position, up there with the best attacking midfielder in the game, as a fullback!
But Southgate will stick to his small plan, within his small view of the beautiful game, and continue to do small things with England, until he is sacked.
Jurgen will make sure Trent is built up again, and as fans, we have a small part to play in that too. World class, but yes, nobody likes to be discarded.
He’s shown everyone what he’s made of for the last 4-5 years, as far as a RB goes I think we’re seeing the finished article.
When his career is over and done with it won’t be defined by what he did/didn’t do with England…Not that it’ll matter because England will never win anything.
No fan of Boregate but people make way too much of his squad selections, there are 3 capable Right backs there…you don’t need more than that. It’s not the squad selection that’s the problem, it’s the way he sets up the team virtually every game.
If we get the results in the next few weeks I’m sure Southgate will still take Trent to the World Cup - but probably won’t play him.
Its embarrassing really. Trent is one of the most decorated and most experienced players in the England squad. He should be third or fourth captain already.
And he should have a guaranteed starting place. Maybe that will mean England would concede one goal in 4 games because of Trent but it would also be potentially two assists per game.
Looking at that English line-up from Hansi Flick’s viewpoint, it might have played directly into his hands that the two front players with the most to prove: Sané and Havertz are going up against the plodders at the back. No Walker. That’s an invitation to party.
At least Shaw is trying to impersonate a wing back and does get forward, increasingly so the half drags on. But James hardly ever crossses the halfway line.
