Finland and Russia go head to head in the second round of Euro 2020 Group B fixtures in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday afternoon.
The visitors sealed their maiden victory at a major international tournament courtesy of Joel Pohjanpalo’s post-restart header against Denmark at the weekend, though that match in Copenhagen was obviously overshadowed by the collapse of Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in the first half but is now thankfully stable and talking in hospital.
As well as for the Danes, the whole experience will have obviously been very distressing for Finland’s players and coaches and it would be completely understandable if their minds were not fully on the task at hand on Wednesday as a result.
Russia opened their campaign later on Saturday evening with a listless 3-0 defeat by tournament contenders Belgium on home soil, with Romelu Lukaku notching either side of a Thomas Meunier goal.

Finland’s players are bound to have been impacted by the events in Copenhagen, where football quickly became very unimportant.
I can see this being the worst of the tournament, like when a big Sam team takes on a Tony Pullis one.
Russia may have to go for it so at least it helps Finland on the counter.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Russians (against Belgium) were abysmal but the Finnish (against Denmark) were at least gritty. The Finns do know that another upset would put them in the next round and that will be an unbelievable achievement.
Not a bad game so far. Finland offside…goal chalked off. Russia just missed a massive chance.
VAR is very quick, none of the 20 minutes at the Copa America or the PL, does seem on the close ones they don’t check I wonder if they’ve gone with the MLS rule.

VAR in this tournament is like in continental Europe. This is how VAR should be. The FA version of VAR is strange, irritating and extremely tedious.

VAR in the PL seems to be more like the Copa America though not as tedious.
Spent about 5 minutes checking if the penalty had encroachment, sometimes the checking is just odd, two or three replays should be enough if you haven’t decided then it’s not overruled.
