Ex-player Trent Alexander-Arnold

The one with 173 goal contributions (8 in cup finals) in 258 games and 15 trophies?

From what I remember, the issue initially was more of tactical nature how to make it all work (before they fixed their midfield), then injuries, then some fans having a problem with him for what, not leaving?

His ability to produce on the pitch and in big moments was never in question. He was said to have been very shy as a character, but football wise he also had the personality needed to be one of the key players there.

Better than God, not a chance.

Point being that despite all that he had to face a lack of affection which ultimately soon turned into abuse.

And did he struggle with his football because of it or wished to go elsewhere?

Other players who keep wanting to go there, be it stars or top talents?

That has nothing to do with what we’re discussing here. We’re saying that Trent can expect the reception to start getting sour very soon if he keeps playing like his debut.

That actually provides context for why the fans are such cunts. They have sky high expectations and get toxic if they do not get everything they want all the time. As is the case with most group think, it very quickly coalesces into a pile on for one player in ways that often defy rationality.

Trent has arrived there with a reputation following him that has people all over salivating at the prospect of it going in a direction that will allow them to stick the boot in. If the Real fans go looking for a scapegoat for things not going great, and it is likely they will, and soon, its difficult to see how they fail to land on him.

Maybe Trent will have the same DGAF attitude as Bale. I think from what we’ve seen of him so far though that seems unlikely.

I don’t get how Liverpool fans can be all holier than thou about Real fans theoretically booing Trent in the future when our fans were actually booing him just last month.

Seems weird to me.

We were speaking more in general about past players/examples, then we went back to specifically about Trent and what might happen in the future. I’d put a safe bet that it will go as with most big players who went there.

Trent was booed once after it came out he had closed negotiations and was leaving on a free.

We’re talking about a fan base who will demand the head of any player if they are not 2 up against getafe within 20 mins. They make walshy look patient and measured.

Yes, but there’s a difference between things that might happen at some undefined point in the future and things that actually happened in the recent past.

Anyway, I’m not going to get into it. Everyone’s got their own position on the issue and it’s been done to death.

Onwards and upwards :+1:t4:

Yes, and he got so upset he left the country.

I’d be careful not to mix up a lot of things here. Stadium crowd, local crowd, tourist crowd, social media, media as in journalists, etc.

I can’t pretend I know every single aspect of that at Real Madrid (even if I do have a friend who is Spanish, a Madrid local, a Real fan, grew up close to the Bernabeu and lives in Croatia in the last few years).

I know their media is incredibly hands on with the tiniest of details (also pretty knowledgeable, it goes together with the huge influence on football in the last few decades, they literally pissed on football rivals on all levels, club and country).

That the Bernabeu can be pretty merciless at times, they had some poor moments like that goodbye with Raul as an example (but I blame the club more for that, there was no proper goodbye?!).

Pretty sure that it’s not all that terrible.

They are the world’s biggest club so naturally the % (total, both in real life or online) of idiots increases.

My point is that I’ve read so much about this toxic aspect, yet I keep seeing most (and the best) players willing to go there, saying things like ā€œReal is the only place I’d leave X forā€, etc. And succeeding, even with the bad aspects that can come with it. Do they look to me like they don’t enjoy themselves the majority of the time? No. They get on with it. Big players at a big club.

I think a lot of us fans would be surprised to realize how players care less about the things that a lot of us care about. What do they want to do mainly (though not only!)? Improve towards the best teams, win and earn the most money as possible. Not particularly in that order. And Real wins. A lot. And yes, it’s also a glamorous place and it sells.

I don’t have to be a fan of it or even like it to easily recognize it.

I’m not talking about struggling players who weren’t good enough and/or couldn’t handle the pressure of that stage. I don’t know, a Gravesen or whoever.

I also don’t think the fact that Trent knows only one club so far, had a fatherly figure as his most influential coach so far… plays such a part. What does that have to do with anything? Is he homesick like Jesus Navas? I don’t think so.

It’s more of a feeling of satisfaction that a portion of Liverpool fans would get if Trent fails or does a bit average there.

I’m not saying it’s impossible, just that it rarely happens there with good players unless it’s a total tactical stupidity (like their midfield once in the post-Makelele era when they fielded Figo-Beckham-Guti-Zidane). Bringing Trent into this Real side is nothing too wild. They need a RB, he’s one of the best out there and they have the tools to make it function.

They can make mistakes even these days, mistakes are eternal, but they have learned a lot from that time. Funny, but their biggest rivals taught them (and still do) some big lessons how a team should work.

Spot on CardiffPete impression, tbf.

You read quickly, but I bet you didn’t.

I didn’t read CardiffPete either, life’s too short.

Makes sense then to compare us.

Bring them all back!

Here’s another hard fact. Phil Neal won 8 league titles and 4 European Cups and is comfortably the best RB I’ve ever seen at Anfield.

We were talking about the best scousers of the PL era, not LFC players.

Yeah, I think most can agree that in the end (or maybe it’s not the end!), he doesn’t displace Neal in Liverpool’s all time XI. But pretty sure Trent can live with it, being ā€œone of the bestā€ in a certain position is mostly good enough also. For some, he might be in.

Gerrard Fowler Macmanaman then Trent (Owen isn’t scouse otherwise he’d be in after Robbie)
