We all knew it was a bullshit line. Even at Liverpool he’d never win the ballon d’or playing at right back. As attacking and creative the modern right backs are, they still are judged by the defensive solidity and Trent weakness in that area would always hold him back. And anyway, players who aim for individual accolades of that, or ones that are not based on stats like scoring records or defensive records, are focusing completely on the wrong thing in my opinion and I would question their motivation.

I don’t feel any Schadenfreude. He has what he wanted, which is to take up a new challenge in a different country, within an entirely different football culture.
I’m sure that he knew quite exactly what he was setting his feet into. Yeah the Ballon d’Or quote was daft, no question, but in footballing terms, he must have known that it wouldn’t be a cakewalk to establish himself as a regular at Madrid.
I’ve no problems with him deciding to leave. Also, he might have foreseen the absolute disaster Slot’s second season was, and that we’d enter a transitional period after that.
He made the choice to go somewhere else, it’s sound. Madrid is a great city, and Real, whether we like it or not, is the biggest club in Europe, and arguably on earth, with a breathtaking set of players, able to win the whole lot. I can understand why he’d want to be a part of that.

You know what I mean. He is in the prime of his career, on the cusp of taking the Captaincy of his boyhood club, and he decided the go to Real Madrid to sit on their bench and end up getting flipped to a mid table premier league team.

Seems there was a pattern of discontent at the club though, despite the league title win.

Trent, Mo & Robbo all left, and there were reported examples of dissent/unrest from Jones & MacAllister

This doesn’t mean Slot wasn’t the common problem but I wouldn’t put Trent or Robbo down on him as the problem. Trent had his head turned by Real, who had likely been courting him for a while and the refusal to give Robbo a new contract probably didn’t come from Slot. I expect Hughes was more likely there.
I think so, yes, he and Mo where catalysts for so much reaction to adverse results. Like Gerard was.
Would Slot have played them is another question however in the championship winning season he reverted to these two a lot despite using Trent less and less Trent became a bit of a super sub.
I watched many of the final games of the season with my son and remember clearly how we struggled to win matches and would look at each other and say Trent’s coming on. When he came on it was ‘here we go Trent and Mo will dig us out’. It was really quite fun those moments after watching the dire football until that moment. They both would just shift into another gear.
