Ex-player: Xabi Alonso

Think at this point it’s more likely that Xabi will take over City or PSG in the summer than Slot leaving or being sacked.

ManU are on the verge of appointing a caretaker until the end of the season when presumably they already have someone in mind to take over.

Also really can’t see Alonso wanting to go to ManU.

Xabi…take a few months off…and see what the outcome is at LFC.

Does he really look like someone who would take over PSG? I could understand Man City but I’m pretty sure he won’t join them because they plan these things and they couldn’t have planned for Alonso leaving the club of his dreams - I think that “honour” will go to Kompany, though Maresca seems like a decent interim option.

For what it’s worth, I hope Alonso stays put until the summer. We’ll see what happens then with Slot.

If he went to Man Utd you probably don’t want him. Be like Rafa type choices of appointments.

PSG and City are possibles.

Xabi can always go for the Bayern Job.

If there’s a sense in which we might be interested in Xabi in the summer, depending on how Slot fares in the second half of the season, I suspect Xabi’s future will be sorted out before then.

Guardiola is leaving Man City and I can see Xabi going there, unfortunately,

If he had a straight choice between them and coming here, I think he would come here. But the timing looks to me as though it won’t work out. Man City will button it down, and let him recharge his batteries for the remainder of the season, while Slot continues at Liverpool.

Let’s hope so!

I don’t see why not, both PSG and City, if they would be in for him I think he’d be interested. I don’t think City can plan in the same way every time. But we’ll see, the timing of Xabi when he wants to go back in, where when some of these positions open up…

BBC Sport columnist Guillem Balague said that there was ‘a clash between a coach with a clear methodology and players who want to rely on instinct’.

A clear methodology, eh? How about Slot to RM and Xabi to Anfield?

Sadly, no. I think qualifying for the CL would keep Slot in post and Xabi would probably jump at the Man City job if Pep were to leave.

I thought Maresca was being lined up for City?

Hopefully they go for him or Kompany.

When it comes to Man City, they strike me as a club that have a succession plan for Guardiola already mapped out - I said elsewhere that I thought Kompany would be the one to replace him eventually but we’ll see, it might be someone else altogether. When it comes to PSG, I just think that there’s not much of a challenge in that league, you basically get a season to try and win CL - I don’t think that would be appealing to Alonso.

I think that Alonso has quality for both clubs, therefore I think he has the required qualities to take over at Liverpool if FSG decide to part ways with Slot. If I was him, though, I’d wait until the end of the season and see what my options are - which I think he will do anyway.

Yeah I mean, planning is great, but it’s not every time that they will be able or even want to plan so long in advance. Different events can change broad plans in the mean time.

When I look at different PSG head coaches (proven, less proven, winners and less winners, younger, older, domestic, foreign, etc.) in the last years, I don’t see why Xabi would be an exception of not being interested. Of course, it depends if he would be right now or in the near future, compared to other job offers.

Heard it mentioned that Spurs would be a good choice for Xabi :man_shrugging:

Since none of us know Alonso or what he might do for his career, I’m going to throw it out there that Utd “might” be an option for him.
Unless someone has more knowledge of his future plans.

I actually do know him personally. I rang him yesterday and jokingly asked him if he would consider the Utd job.
He told me to fuck right off and that we are no longer friends because I suggested such a thing.

So, no he isn’t going for the Utd job and I have fallen out with a dear friend.
