Ex-player: Xabi Alonso

Who’s likable?

Alexis? Szoboszlai? Isak?

Maybe the lads on their way out, Virg or Mo? Maybe even the universally popular Robbo…

Some people might be losing their heads; other people have their heads firmly lodged up their own arse.

He’s not a Liverpool legend anyway. Crowd favourite for sure but he doesn’t come close to touching legend status.

I’m a little behind so hadn’t seen that he had been announced as manager. Bit of a weird move for him I think. There is every chance he suffers like so many others have, gets fired and then all of a sudden he’s several years removed from Leverkusen with two firings on his CV. Would have thought he’d be looking at more stable environment than Chelsea.

4 years, apparently

It’s not that bad of a move really. He has been given assurances that no intervention will happen from the suits. He will have a final say on the transfers. And, he gets a endless pit of money kind of budget there at Chelsea, which not many clubs in the world can offer you.

The talent pool is still quite strong. Enzo,Caicedo, Neto,Estevao, Jao Pedro and Palmer to name a few. With a few squad tweaks, training , well drilled team and a world class goalkeeper, they can deffo challenge for trophies in no time.

Us,on the other hand, look far from ready to challenge for trophies again. It would be amazing if we can even achieve Top4 again with this squad next season, irrespective of the manager. Moreover, our bigger problem is the power grab in house fight between manager and DoF i.e. Hughes/Edwards.
These two will never relinquish their powers to hire a manager , and hence for me, Alonso was a non starter always.

@rab, while I wouldn’t put it quite in the same terms as @El-Cuchillero has, you seem to take a weirdly defensive position when it comes to what’s going on at the club. You say you want Slot to be replaced at the end of the season but then denigrate any options people suggest while offering nothing of your own.

I don’t know about likeability but there are big question marks on all the players that @El-Cuchillero has questioned.

What is your position actually?

@Vangart if Hughes/Edwards were doing a good job with recruitment then I’d be okay with the head coach structure.
I’m just confused as to the direction that the recruitment has taken which only doesn’t fit the existing squad or the way that we’ve been playing and establishing an identity over the last 10 years, it doesn’t even fit how the Premier League works. And I don’t think it’s a style of play that will ever work for Liverpool football club. What exactly does Edwards do in his role? And given that he has had great success in recruitment and sales himself, when he sees certain things that are going to make a huge long-term impact on Liverpool football club and will be positions from which it will be hard for us to extricate ourselves from and I’m talking about the Isak Wirtz purchases, don’t you think he should’ve stepped in and said to his mate look this doesn’t seem right?

That’s the exact promise they made to Pochettino and then it turned out to be a lie.

Sorry @maria I was totally wrong about him, according to TIA the club courted him even while he was at Madrid but according to what he said the club didn’t contact him which is total BS because imo he jumped into an easy job where he can have a pick of thousands of players worldwide instead of going to a basket case like the Liverpool job, I am very disappointed in him and now I hope they appoint Iraola and rub our hands to the prospect of meeting star studded Chelski in the new season.

Every signing Hughes has made will be good business eventually. This season is a write-off unfortunately but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Give them time. We signed quality players then gave them no structure to display that talent.

Baffling to me that you could describe Liverpool as a basketcase while extoling the virtues of Chelsea. Have we all gone mad?

Xabi is a potentially world class manager who is now at a rival and we’re going to be stuck with Slot. I am livid to be honest.

I know it sounds like sour grapes but yes I agree with you.

Only 4? Guess they’re skint these days.

By the way Chelsea go through managers, he’ll probably be available before the end of the year anyway.

No I was describing what he would feel before he chose Chelsea instead of Liverpool but as someone else said it is definitely not a bed of roses as Pocchettino, Rafa etc would confirm.

@Sweeting I can’t reconcile how the Isak, Wirtz will work in conjunction with Hugo. Not questioning their quality. Coutinho was also quality and id say a better fit for the PL than Wirtz is. In absolute terms, he was the most skilful and probably talented of Klopp’s entire squad then. But the pieces Klopp/Edwards got subsequently fit together better.
I think not only does Wirtz not fit in this squad, he isn’t quite right for the PL. it’s happened in the past to players like Veron at Man United.

I don’t think it’s sour grapes, I think it’s a reasonable assessment. His title winning season at Leverkusen was thrilling, but having seen a few of the games, there was some real seat of the pants stuff. I’m not sure whether the same fans that wanted him would have turned on him when things went awry.

Having said that, it would have been more fun than the dross we have watched this season.

I would not not be so down hearted it might be a blessing in disguise the fact he chose Chelsea over us.

Yeah but this comes with the backdrop of huge fan protests due to their massive dip in results and performances plus big financial losses.

Even by Chelseas’s own standards, the managerial revolving door has been beyond a joke.

And it’s unlikely Alsonso’s representatives haven’t done their due diligence and posed those same questions during their negotiations.
