Chiesa and Diaz are exactly opposite situations. One has hope (maybe delusional hope) because we don’t get a chance to watch him, while the other gets criticized all the time despite his contributions just because we able to watch him week in week out.
There are too many people who are overly confident with their opinions. I trust Slot’s decision over everyone
A big part of the issue is he hasn’t even got to see that because of how much of Ferde’s training has been individualized away from the rest of the team. And then even the sessions where he’s come back in are generally not the sort that allow you to outcompete the guy who currently has the shirt.
This conversation feels like it is a response to a season going according to plan and so scrambling to find things to be critical of. The big wigs made clear he was someone we were going to have to invest and time and patience into and our results gave us the luxury of doing that and not trying to force him to be ready. He has seemingly had a few setbacks and so has likely taken longer to rebuild back into first team level fitness than most imagined, but it’s pretty clear from the ample footage we see that everyone seems on board with how it’s playing out with Ferde carrying himself in the exact opposite way of someone feeling like he’s been hard done by with a manager who is treating him poorly or doesn’t rate him.
I just think negotiations dragged on for far longer than was necessary, stop start since the summer when it should’ve been a priority. Ideally you wouldn’t have such uncertainties looming over you going into the new season. We should be privileged they had their heart set on staying when it would’ve been very easy for them to follow Trent out the door.
It’s really not. This has been bugging me way before it became apparent that we would run away with the league.
We are all making assumptions. There are a few different scenarios that could be in play. Maybe, this is the plan for him this season and Chiesa has bought in. Or, he isn’t fit/training properly.
Personally. I’d be more inclined to think otherwise, if Slot hadn’t been treating Elliott and Endo the same, although to a lesser degree. I am certain of one thing though: We may have got him for peanuts, but he isn’t Ben Davies. His transfer value was 70 mil. 3 years ago, and he’s 27. He could be a real asset if properly utilized and it’ll be a shame if he leaves without ever been given a proper opportunity.
Slot was asked a lot during the first half of the season about Chiesa’s lack of opportunities and he was very clear and straight forward with the answer - it’s not a problem, he just needs time and individualized training to get physically ready, and we are being very patient and careful with it.
So if we are acknowledging what is being said, and we are not assuming he is lying to us, at what point do get to a place where his continued absence is just Slot being unfair to him? And how far are we by that point from it being damn near certain that Slot was delivering #20? And that’s without even considering that the player himself appears totally happy how it is all going.
There were plenty of opportunities to play Chiesa. Slot could be bringing him on for 10-15 minutes and gradually allow him to gain some sharpness and rhythm. The most typical example is the City game, which was done and dusted quickly and yet instead of playing Chiesa, Slot opted to bring Gakpo on who was coming off the ankle injury after the derby and was nowhere near being ready even for the 10 minutes he got.
Also, we don’t really know Chiesa’s state of mind. Just because nothing contrary has come out, it doesn’t mean that he is happy with his situation.
These are all good points. There is 1 other point which I wonder if Mo’s contract situation might have played a part in him being signed. Maybe Hughes initial discussions with Mo and his agent were less warm than he was expecting and felt that Mo leaving at the end of the season was a strong chance.
Chiesa becomes available and well under his market value. Highes thought the chance to bring in someone that could easily cover Mo’s position on the right for less than market value made sense. As the season went on, discussions with Mo and his agent improved meaning Chiesa became less needed than was originally thought, so the need to integrate him into the team became less pressured as Mo ended up extending his contract
it’s not just about a player’s fitness and rhythm but about how they fit into the system and contribute to the way he wants the team to play. He’s also spoken about this when talking about his reluctance on using Endo more.
I’m not sure about this since it’s been quite clear since the start of the season that we view him is a longer-term option, giving him plenty of recuperation time.
