My fear is that the American refs will have been leaned on to go by a certain script, which is to make sure Messi gets to the final. I don’t expect fair officiating, and I fully expect Argentina to exploit that with all the dark arts on display. I would say that it is an unfortunate fact of the modern game that we have spent a little over a decade in an era where robust defence and quick counters have been largely ascendant for ball control.

That just isn’t the nature of Argentinian, and indeed most South American football. We saw how different the mentality is with Luis Suarez, for better and for worse.
