FIFA World Cup 2026 - USA/Canada/Mexico (Part 3)

Then what, after the questions?
FIFA have already had their fees from the broadcasters.
US stadium owners have already been paid for the merchandise and catering services.
And the US economy is still cashing in on the visitors spending.

So aside from questions being asked, zero difference has been made by the random TV abstainer

I miss Paraguay.

They played proper football.

They called John Coltrane a weirdo.

Coltrane and the Paraguay football team do not belong in the same conversation

Their fans do, though.

Asunción is the Ascension of world football

Yeah, but questions would be asked, and it could have an impact on what the advertisers would pay for the next world cup. But I understand that we’ll never see 100 million people stop following their national team because of political reasons, so you’re right.

Anyway, beyond this, for me the main thing is: do I still enjoy watching a world cup? If yes, I’ll watch. If no, I’ll swerve it. I wouldn’t have enjoyed watching games in 2022, being played in a theocratic dictatorship, in a non-football country, and in a world cup blatantly obtained by corrupting FIFA officials.

Right now, I’m a bit on the fence. These ‘hydration breaks’ for instance tend to put me off. I’ve already stopped watching games when one of these ridiculous breaks occured. The so-called ‘music’ being played in stadia whenever there is a moment when the game is stopped. Meh… every time, I ask myself whether it’s worth it.

The Balogun corruption scandal hasn’t helped either. Blatant corruption again. What next to put me off even more?

Who is this “very experienced…the best” ref that Trump spoke to?

Bet he’s in hiding.

Thats why he only comes in after halftime.

Congratulations @Magnus for Norway getting through, what an achievement. So pleased for Belgium knocking out USA and Spain.

I have only managed to watch the Spain v Portugal game.

I missed the England game live, I have watched the highlights, but that it was not enough. So willl watch it on BBCiplayer tonight. It looked like an amazing atmosphere. I felt really sorry for the Mexican players. At least they tried to play football and gave it their all.

Thing is, every World Cup is different.
Different locations attract different advertising so i doubt that would be a factor looking 4 years ahead.

Agree about things that make this particular World Cup less appealing.
Hydration breaks.
Half time entertainment planned for the final.
Trump.
Trump.
Trump.
Trump.
Infantino.
It’s coming home.

Cant recall if I watched much in 2022, I can barely remember what I had for tea last night.

Football in America has come a LONG way, but there is a segment of the population for whom it will always be the 90s where the game is some communist adjacent oddity that would be easily fixed with two minutes of applying the American mind to it. People like this…

Thankfully these people will now largely stop participating in the discussion of the game now the US team is out

I’ve heard that a post-game chat between Packers/Bears fans is more or less indistinguishable from a Socratic debate held in Lorenzo de’ Medici’s Florentine Academy.

People dont know this, but Michelangelo was the first person to shout “Da Bears”

Unironically though I think this is the right take.

Kind of fitting, true story. Mrs and I were in Brügge years ago and got asked by two American tourists where the statue of the little boy pissing is. Again, we were in Brügge.
