I think this issue is VASTLY OVERSTATED. Everytime the US loses we trot out this same pay to play stuffâŚ
I have kids who play the game and Iâve coached a few youth teams. I have friends who have kids in the game. In the past I did opposition scouting for a youth NT..
We live here in a capitalist system and there is no way you can have free academies. Its just not possible. But the truth is that these are not the only optionsâŚ
More importantly, the MLS academies are constantly scouting players, both within and outside academies and do provide a pathway.
Are there kids being missed? Absolutely! Its a huge countryâŚ
What is FAR MORE IMPORTANT and often overlooked is the quality of players coming out of the MLS system and academies. Just watch the US youth teamsâŚ
That is very generous. Friedel and Reyna were the only ones who were established and playing regularly in Europe. McBride would but not until a few years later. Berhalter had moved to the Prem the season before but more or less failed and went back home immediately after. Donovan the team star had one failed move to Europe under his belt by 2002 and would have another couple of attempts later none of which really took (a less than 10 game spell with Everton was his Euro peak).
Nah not at all. They had o Brien at Ajax, a few players at Bundesliga clubs including Leverkusen who were good, Eddie Lewis at Fulham, later at Leeds.
This is their squad and who they played for.
They had some pretty decent players. No superstars but they still don´t have any.

Eddie Lewis - 10 games in 2 years. John o Brien had indeed been at Ajax for a few years but played not much more regularly than Lewis.
Its hardly comparable to what they have today
