FIFA World Cup 2026 - USA/Canada/Mexico (Part 4)

its not about levels, its about being smart. you have to keep the opposition honest and put in an attacking player who can cause problems. you dont put 6 defenders against a good team with 20 minutes to go

Touchel we made attacking subs 5 minutes to go and 2-1 down doesn’t count.

Just because you put an attacking player on, does not mean you have the space to actually do it.

This game was won by the superior team, period!

Yeah…

Listening to him talk now, I’m not sure he’s losing heaps of sleep over this.

Cowardly management cost us it again unfortunately.
Awful awful subs to throw away any attacking or positional threat we had.

Not a side with a lot of attacking or midfield quality on the ball especially but we should have had enough.

Just walked through hundreds and hundreds of Argentinian fans on the way home, feeling brave in groups. Cheers Tuchel.

Still looks really bloody odd

If THIS is Tuchel’s response to taking a lead against a top nation then he deserves the sack.

He neutered England and left the team without any outlets.

Even Sam Allardyce would have done better.

yes, you right it does not mean you can actually do it. thats not the point. the point is when you put in a rashford, noni or saka, you make the opposition think, you make the opposition uncomfortable and that is a victory in itself. But when the opposition feel like they are in a situation akin to shooting fish in a barrel, then the game is lost and its just a matter of time

Noice.

Same every tournament it seems.

We lose every time we play a decent big nation. We did beat a crap Germany side once but otherwise, every time. Cowardly approach each time too.

Exactly. Tuchel handed all the initiative to Argentina. It was tactically inept, and he was brought in to be better than that.

No outlet for England or danger to Argentina. England camped out at the edge of their own box for half an hour.

What did Tuchel think was going to happen?

And then when he did bring a couple of attacking subs on, time had almost run out. Make those subs at the last hydration break and get back into the game.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC One: "We’re disappointed, we were so close but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances.

"We could not turn the ball possession around and then conceded so many crosses, chances and shots.

“We were close but couldn’t keep the level up after we scored.”

On his subs: "I did also offensive substitutions in the last games, we just tried to help the players. We conceded [a chance] straight away and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open.

"They won every header, they kept crossing and crossing so we went to a back five to close the gaps inside and be strong in the air. Straight after our goal, without any substitutions, we conceded way too many crosses and way too many chances so we tried to help.

“Of course, the responsibility is on the coach and if it doesn’t go well, it is easy to say it was wrong.”

On thoughts of going for the second goal: "Yes but it doesn’t help if you can’t get the ball. We couldn’t get out.

"Of course we wanted to go for the second goal but I did not have the feeling that offensive substitutions would help. We stayed in our 4-4-2 but we became passive, more and more passive.

"We couldn’t win any balls, we couldn’t keep the ball so I think it was not a structural problem, we changed nothing. But the match changed completely.

“It’s no problem, I can understand these discussions are out there and there are millions of coaches after the game who know it better.”…bbc

  • Give it to Rooney. He seems to be an expert based on his work as a pundit.

  • doubt Tuchel is going anywhere but the good news is that Klopp is returning to England in two years. He’ll leave with that European trophy and if necessary he’ll take Tuchel back home with him.

Yep. Better to die standing up than on your knees.

But as people have said, no logic to it. 30 mins of inviting pressure. Why would we?

Who would have thought sitting back after scoring a goal would win you a match?
