This is what I said about him in the match thread..

I get people thinking Wirtz doesn’t do enough, and certainly that he loses the ball too meekly too often, but thought he did a lot of nice things today.

I offer this as evidence.

This is an example of the dilemma we seem to have. He has some flaws in his game right now, primarily losing the ball too often too meekly. But the biggest issue is he isn’t directly creating enough goals that people reasonably expect from him. He is doing a LOT of this though, and so a lot of our best football is still flowing through him. This just isn’t what you spend over 100m on. Even if you drop him deeper into being an orthdox CM so he can be doing this all game, like a modern day Modric, that still isnt what you spend that sort of money on and leaves us a creative void that still needs to be filled.

Annoyingly given who its coming from, i think this sums up really well the challenge I have with Wirtz now and why its been a struggle to evaluate him.

You can very clearly see his talent and you can see his enthusiasm to play. He definitely isn’t hiding, but far too much of his good work is in the wrong areas and there is too little killer instinct in the areas you need your 100m creative lynchpin to be operating in.

Its definitely not a talent issue, but he very much plays right now like he’s got a mental block.
