Giorgi MAMARDASHVILI: 2025/26

And Dunna runna cost less!

That’s insane! I didn’t actually see the fee when they signed him. They got a bargain to be fair! Mamma might prove to be the bargain of the century yet though - but he’s got a very long way to go!

Well, he has replaced Kelleher, that boat has sailed.

It’s early days, and I think our defence all over is a bit of a mess at the moment. You mentioned that he doesn’t command his box, but I felt on Sunday that he just wasn’t organising his defenders at all. I rather like a shouty, angry keeper, and he didn’t come across like that at all.

I don’t think it is all his fault. It looks like our players are being coached to defend differently, and he needs to adapt to that as well.

The transfer fee might have been less, but there are several reasons for that.

  1. Donnaruma was already on fucking obsene wages so highly unlikely that City would be paying much less than 4-450Kp/w for his salary.

  2. PSG for whatever reason wanted shot of him and despite him leading them to the C/L trophy were actively touting him to anyone that was looking for a keeper which makes it hard to demand a top fee unless you can generate enough interested clubs to create a bidding war.

  3. Valencia had Mamardashvili tied down for another few seasons so they could still use him being on a lonmger term contract to push any transfer price up.

Fair comments all; coulda shoulda done better on the first and he definitely should have been charging out to a looping cross that was just about on the 6 yard line.

As a goalie on that first one I think we’ve all been suckered into how good Alisson is on that kind of chance, it is a complicated save. I’ve tried different techniques, one where I drag one leg behind was most effective but then you don’t want to do that often as it risks injury.

He’s no better or worse than Kelleher currently, Kelleher was hardly commanding.

He’s in the process of getting himself off the ground on the other side of the goal to where the cross lands when the ball gets to Bruno. He wouldn’t have got anywhere near it had he tried

You know what I mean by saying ‘replacing Kelleher’. Shall I rephrase for you so you understand? ‘he has a long way to go before he is performing at the same level as Kelleher’ - better now?

I wasn’t having a go at you, just making the point that we are where we are.

Mixed start to his Liverpool career so far I’d say - then again it’s been all of 3 and half games, I was excited when we signed him having watched all his games at the Euros and I do think in time he’ll prove to be at least as good as Kelleher, if not better.

I’ve just watched it again. He was on his feet as the ball is about to come in, he comes half way as the ball is about halfway, balks and retreats. If he comes he is probably getting there.

That’s before the ball arrives at Fernandes and he’s picked himself up already

The ball is on the way. At this point he is about equidistant from the eventual contact point of the header as Maguire is.

He’s now balked and backed off a step

Maguire has just made contact on the 6 yard line while the keeper has made his way all across the goal line in via a detour.

Fuck knows why the merry go round everytime I say someone could have done better.

Your first pic is literally him having just got to his feet

Don’t be so precious. You are not the only person who has made the comment about him not coming for the cross so my post was not a direct response to you. It’s also appropriate to point out our last direct engagement was me making a general comment about conversation that was happening across multiple threads and you coming at me to call me out.

Hardly precious. I have critiques of players and pretty often you’re on here as the resident sage with what we saw wasn’t actually the case and that this is ‘really’ what happened. The last one of note was Kerkez and his fuck up and you went out of your way to mention how Slot himself said otherwise. Now Slot’s in the dogbox with everyone apparently so where to from there?

In any case, you’ve gone from process of getting back in his feet to just back on his feet. Point is he reacted slowly, moved slowly and balked whereas a more decisive action would have seen him in the thick of things and in Maguires face at the very least although he should have got there is my view. He hasn’t covered himself in glory there at all and no amount of ‘but this is what really happened’ is going to change it.

My first feeling when that goal went it was how badly we defended that zone where Maguire was. He was almost left alone. Set-pieces are big these days, but also the second phase in last years in general. We absolutely have to improve that. I think it’s Aaron Briggs’ new (or added) responsibility. Mama definitely could’ve done better at the first goal, but there’s more than one guilty player/aspect in both goals.

Just watched it back, he has no chance of getting that second one. It would’ve been a poor decision to charge out at that.

Could have saved the first.

Strange. We were very strong on defending set pieces under Klopp, and also last season. This one, it’s a mess until now.

Yes there are differences of opinion at times. It’s ok. If you think someone is at fault for a goal and someone thinks someone else deserves more criticism (e.g. Kirkez vs Frimpong for Palace’s winner) that’s just a conversation.

Yes. Your images dont contradict what I said. He dived to save the initial shot and so was on the ground as the ball was already traveling to Bruno. You cannot see the ball well here, but it’s already about half the way to him.

Your images dont contradict that at all. Maybe you want to quiblle over technicalities on when he is “getting up” vs already on his feet, but it doesnt change that from the place he is in the image above you are expecting him to get back onto his feet, gather himself and then make up a distance about 5 times bigger than the one Ibou was unable to cover. Yeah, I just dont think that is remotely reasonable

Like with the Palace winner, this doesnt mean Im doing mental gymnastics to avoid players being criticized, I just think some of the criticisms from some people would be better being redirected to something/someone else. This goal is similar to what we’ve seen before where players are initially in position to defend and then just dont. Here we have 3 defenders in position to challenge Maguire. 2 of them are no longer there by the ball gets to him because they have started just stepping forward rather than defending the situation. That has been a pattern of too often too many players just not finishing the defensive sequence

The bottom line is that with Ali in goal, I’m pretty sure we win that game against Man Utd. He likely would have saved the first one. To be fair to Mama though Ali is the best in the world one-on-one with a striker so he has set a very high bar.
Hopefully Ali is back soon as him missing is not helping us one bit. Mama has time on his side in terms of impressing and cementing his place here. But right now we need Alisson Becker.

I’m not convinced Alisson would’ve made such a difference on Sunday. Right now the balance of the team isn’t right, we’re easy to play against and sometimes it doesn’t even matter anymore who is in goal, when it’s like that. They’re facing firing squads at times. Ali had a number of incredible saves against Palace, but we still lost that game…

It’s the three Man Utd players unmarked that I have the issue with.
