Looks like they are really working on his passing game.
He looked comfortable last night which is the first time I could say that. Not as in comfortable denying the chances but he seemed just comfortable in his own skin.
34 goals conceded in 20 games last season…
He had to play behind a leaky defence but jury still out?
I think so. For me it’s more that I’m sceptical about his ability to deal with balls in behind the defence when needed. I don’t know much about being a goalie, but to me he looks like he doesn’t enjoy going beyond the penalty spot, and certainly not outside the area.
I don’t expect him to become Unai Simon overnight, but I think it’s something he needs to get used to if he wants the job when Ali goes.
Maybe he’s going to be the eventual no2 to our eventual new no1…
He didnt have much to do on Wednesay but there was one dicey moment related to exactly this. The two CBs got caught with a ball over the top and it wasnt clear if the ball was going to carry into the box. He looked incredibly uncomfortable with it and only half committed to leaving his box to clean it up. He ended up with the ball in his hands, but in a very uncertain way that benefited from a bit of luck as much as judgement. I’ve thought a lot of the criticism of him last season was very harsh, but that was a notably moment
Do you think it’s possible for a goalie to improve significantly at that, at his age? I know Courtois improved his ability to contribute in the build-up at Real Madrid, but when it comes to changing a player’s mentality and basically his whole reaction pattern for how to deal with balls in behind the defence..is it doable?
Improve - for sure. Improve to the point where its adequate for this level - unsure.
I was commenting solely on last night.
I think he looked a bit shaky in the Sunderland game to be fair.
