Japan Airlines is launching a bold tourism initiative that’s turning heads: they’re offering free domestic flights to foreign visitors. But this isn’t just a gimmick, it’s a smart move aimed at encouraging travelers to explore parts of Japan beyond the popular cities like Tokyo and Kyoto. With this offer, visitors can fly to lesser known destinations (like the natural beauty of Tohoku, the beaches of Okinawa, or the snowy mountains of Hokkaido) without spending a dime on airfare.

The goal is to spread tourism more evenly and introduce people to Japan’s quieter, more authentic experiences. From ancient temples hidden in remote forests to quaint fishing villages and local festivals most tourists never see, these “hidden gems” offer a richer, deeper look at Japanese culture. And for travelers, it’s a chance to save money while creating unforgettable memories. Free flights, unique adventures, and fewer crowds? This might just be the best travel deal of the decade.

Why is this in the good news thread? It’s a freaking miserable idea. Why don’t they propose free train or ship tickets if they want to promote other destinations for visitors?

I’m surprised I haven’t heard certain people close to me going on about this already.

It is a real thing but it hasn’t caught people’s attention here yet, which is surprising given the recent upper house election.
