Figured as much. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone play multiscale and headless guitars outside of very technically demanding music.
My existing board - nothing that is on it was what I originally bought - its more of a minefield than buying guitar, must be careful. As well, some pedals conflict with each other and you cannot really tell until it is inserted in the chain. A little space to the left is always a naggin problem, fancy an Eventide H9 Max Harmoniser, but at £700 Im waiting!
I like that.
I’m in a dangerous place at the moment. I could go and blow a whole of cash on stuff not knowing what I’m doing and to be honest as a bedroom guitarist to I really need it?
The plus side is ease in changing tone and some flexibility as well, especially mid song. That said I’m really working on using the tonal changes in the guitar itself more than anything at the moment.
Maybe there’s some logic in trying to put something basic together?
I have to admit to reading this thread with increasing awe at the kit being discussed / displayed. The technology is way beyond me, or my needs as I’m not likely to take a guitar outside these four walls anytime soon.
I’m just going to stick to my ancient and battered acoustic guitars in my battle to emulate poor Bob - at least the neighbours can’t hear my feeble efforts and it’s not too load to disturb Boudica.
Ive seen some videos of pros, I think Premier guitars do them on Youtube reviewing entire rigs, and you have it right, the more it goes into blues and folk the less they have on the floor. Some just 3 or 4 pedals.
Then if you see Ed O’Brien’s board its like the bridge of the Enterprise. Horse for courses but Im into weird tones, and am always searching for that, whereas you are going into the pure form of the art, if there is such a vein now. Too much listening to alternative, and especially Fripp, did this to me. I just want out there sounds coming out of my guitar, even sounds that arent precisely nice, but seem to work, in a wrong/right dynamic.
Well, if you’re writing is anything to go by, probably a better finger picker!
I admire your desire for simplicity. I love acoustic blues, especially that one instrument does all parts style.
If you are able to pull off Mr Johnsons playing you will be quite some pair with Boudica. I’d have never have thought of such a thing. Perhaps you should introduce it to the pre match ritual?
Yes you’re right I don’t want a super complex rig. If I break it down I think I’d think I’d have
Overdrive or two (flexibility and / or boost), Compression / sustain(maybe), perhaps delay. I’d probably use reverb from the amp. I’ve already got a fuzz and a looper which is pushing things into overkill territory.
Even the choice of an overdrive is baffling. Tube screamer or not etc.
Think you might / ought go for a clean booster, with maybe a secondary boost on it? Like Amp 11 (Robben Ford’s go to pedal!); but otherwise I think you have it right for where you are headed. Amp reverb is indisputably the best. A few questions are posed though.
Compressors, translucent seems to be in vogue and thats the way I went, so they dont add so much noticeable drive.
O/Ds are a real minefield, there are several classes of design. A Colorsound, Tubescreamer, Klon, and an earlier one I cant remember, which is soft clipping. I went for a colorsound design for the hard clipping, because I dont like too much fizz around it. I prefer distortion actually because that is aggressively clipped.
Fuzz, you cant have a fuzz on your board, end of story. Its something you will have to get out and put away; they cause so much tone degeneration and conflict with other pedals readily. Had 3 all sold.
Delay is a very important part of this, perhaps the most. I have all digital that emulates analog and tape and a host of other things. The Q in tech was not there in the 90s and noughties but it is now. A proper analog or tape unit will cost you a lot and I dont know if its worth the investment. Not sure of analog myself but can see its uses, its hard to best a good tape delay sound, the flutter on the tail is much more noticeable, hence my favourite being a vintage tape with vibrato on the tail. T C Electronic make really great delays, as do Boss, Eventide and Strymon. But you can get all this from That Pedal Show and decide yourself. Its going to be an event for you!
Thanks lots to get into in there and I have been watching and enjoying “That Pedal Show” of late. Great show but all it’s doing at the moment is opening up options!!
Overdrives is a mare. Gary Moore used a tube screamer, as did Stevie Ray Vaughan so there’s sense in that but I’m also after something really smooth as I can find the screamers too harsh sometimes. I’m looking at the Keeley D&M drive which seems to offer the best of both worlds along with good switchabilty but there’s so many out there its crazy.
Not sure I agree on the Fuzz but I have it and we’ll see. It’s the EH Big Muff who was used by David Gilmour, a favourite of mine. I might just use the sustain function on it plus everyone needs a bit of ZZ top and I could easily drift towards some Hendrix.
Agreed on delays. Another utter minefield. Argh!!!
First port of call is seeing how the new guitar sounds.
I have a Keeley compressor, they make great stuff and he is highly respected; the D&M drive is really an excellent suggestion.
Well, perhaps you’ll have to see for yourself on Fuzz; I thought the same, and the one you have I have been tempted to buy a few times. They do degrade tone, but its about when they are off, not on. It is such a lovely sound, especially at low influence, like the Stones deployed it. But Im afraid its true, the most problem type of pedal hands down.
Yes get used to the guitar and amp for quite a while. I assume its not here yet then??
Nope. Courier delayed collecting it. It’s all wrapped and ready so it is a courier issue.
Yes you’re right. Play first.
Another option would be a tube screamer and then something a little smoother, less mid range hump alongside. Decisions, but I need to hear these P90’s in action first.
I’ll certainly see on the Fuzz but there’s a teeny part of me that would have no objection to collecting classic pedals.
Very disappointing couriers, sigh, no less now want a fingerprint to accept the delivery.
Its very good point, the P90s will need taming.
I dont like tube screamers, for that exact reason. I find middle emphasis increasingly vulgar. IN fact the Klon is merely mid hump with a scoop at the upper mid/treble section of the frequency range, is it 1100hz or so? Had a Klon copy, the Wampler Tumnus, it was great in one position, but spread too much middle around my board and sent the other pedals out.
Actually the only pedal I regret selling is the Fulltone 69MkII, Fuzz, but again had to be powered by a battery to get it to sound well, and could not go on the board. It also ate batteries, but if you put a PSU to it (once you had realised it wanted reverse polarity) that even degraded the output of it when on. Something to do with eddy currents between the transistor and battery I think…but do you see the struggle needs a committed love?
Killing Joke use them because their tech told me, they use the Fulltone I sold, but it comes out for jobs and goes away, like a classic car, or an assassin.
I think mostly with pedals you do get what you pay for; the best stuff costs quite a bit. The cheap stuff mostly doesnt work well. But given you’ve already rooted out Keeley, Im sure you are on the right track.
My trouble is I’m not sure what I want in reality. I have an idea of what tone I’m heading towards but how to get there?
And that leads to the danger of trial and error with lots of stuff or worse still frustration in not achieving what you’re after.
Still I’ve found this page which has some useful thoughts, and of course who wouldn’t want to sound like David Gilmour? I’m kind just scouting round and looking at what set ups guitarists I enjoy listening to have.
Forgot about this. Still winning it but I won’t go above my max bid.
My temporary guitar nut fell off today when I changed my strings and it snapped my brand new top E string.
I shat myself thinking that was it and I had no guitar until Tuesday when Charvel arrives. My acoustic willarrive mid Feb.
But I got some wood glue and sorted it. Luckily I live 2 min walk from a guitar shop and they are open for click and collect so got 2 new sets of strings.
A certain John Mayer has a lot to answer for. He posted saying he was using a Marshal Bluesbreaker pedal mk 1.
As a result they’re like hens teeth and fetch something like £200 second hand. They were like £40 beforehand.
Won pedal for £65
had another blast on the guitar the night after a couple of beer,
this time i tried tuning it right!
tried leaning Johnny be good,
without much success,
altough it did get better with practice…
still early days tho…
but you know what,
i really enjoyed it
One of the best YT chancels to watch IMO. Most Blues on a host of instruments in the Guitar family, some even look like Guitars.
Did you buy the white one?
Well done on Marshall pedal, you neighbours though, this week, on balance wont be as happy as you
