My guitar tutor does the most amazing Comfortably Numb solo.

As above I think it’s a great one to look at. Technically nothing difficult. It’s in Bm.

if there’s one thing I really want to learn is fluidity and being able to move up and down the neck and maintain that fluidity and having a nice melody and flow to solos. Gilmour has this in spades along with a few others. Given the choice I’d rather be a Gilmour clone than a Malmsteen one. For me solo’s need to fit the song. Many you hear don’t IMO.

Yeah you can tell when a solo is stuck on a song and doesn’t fit.

I remember when Bon Jovi previewed (the awful) We weren’t born to follow single (from the awful Circle album) it had no solo. The fans weren’t happy so when it came out as a single there was a solo in it but it was clearly a solo Sambora had laying around that didn’t fit anything so they stuck that in.

It’s one reason why I never took to Van Halen. Obviously massive respect for the guy but when you listen to even their most popular songs the solo’s, to me, just don’t fit.

But now you mention Sambora, another favourite of mine. Dead or Alive - fantastic song, fantastic solo. Always struggled with the pinch harmonics on that one. Must get back to it. Dry County is another one.

Good one for you to learn is Bed of Roses. Not that difficult but some really nice stuff in it. A nice arpeggio, some power chords and a pretty easy solo.

Re Van Halen - Listen to the Jump solo…Doesn’t fit the song at all.
Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme - just wow.

Jump would have been the example I would have quoted. I’m sure there’s a perfectly good music theory reason as to why it does that but to me it doesn’t fit until the final few notes.

Nuno certainly shreds. I haven’t listened to much of his stuff post Extreme though.

Nah I didnt believe it either but £500 later and after three fuzz pedals I really did; takes all the beauty from the dry tone. I mean like Strontium90 does to forests.

Thankfully there are options I think if I’m still heading that way.

Going to try the Fuzz I have in a minute and run it with some of the on board amp effects. Might see if there’s a Hiwatt copy in there too. Just for giggles.

useful experiment but as far as producing anything worthwhile most certainly not. Really muddy would be my best description of it. I just couldn’t get it to gel at all although I do wonder how much of the guitar helped in that. Boomy humbuckers might not have helped. We’ll see.

new guitar tomorrow with luck, and slightly gentler pickups. Either way I’ve learned something

Yep thats what I found with Hiwatt’s, suppose at room level, instead of studio or stadium, it may make all the difference. When I bought it the guy said its “really creamy”, yep, another word for muddy. Gilmour uses a hotrail I think. I prefer the definition Fender amps give, although, I used an Orange for a long time (the only amp to spank a Marshall they say!) I dialed the mids and bass right back.

yeah tried a few different amp models with it and the nicer cleaner one’s certainly worked better but it really wasn’t great. The lead side was ok at a push. Play a chord and it was just mud unless you dialed the pedal right back.

I’ll give it another go but I’m not convinced its the way forward, which a shame but also ok as it’s given me a better indication of what to look for.

Ive heard it said mix opposites, so put Gibsons into Fender amps, and Fenders into Marshalls, so it balances out the high and low outputs.

I think Gibsons dont play chords anywhere near as good as Fenders do; LP is to me a lead guitar entirely.

In my experience a Les Paul only really works with a Marshall. I tried an Epiphone with a Fender amp once and it just didn’t work at all. Same guitar through a Marshall and it barked as it should do and I actually ended up buying it. Bonus is Fenders can do both I guess.

Pretty sure the guitar is part of the problem. If you cant even open up a pedal at low volumes then something isn’t right somewhere along the line. Even 25% on the drive was too much for it. But i’ve noticed that the low strings on the guitar do boom a bit with the amp. But that still doesn’t quite explain how muddy it was at times. Not to worry, I’ll try again before chalking it up as a failed experiment.

If you asked me now what amp I’d want for a gigging set up, I’d honestly have no clue whatsoever.

So the tone hunt continues…

I’m average…can play a few of my favourite solos…but I’ve got a LONG way to go

well guitar isnt coming today…dozy cunts parcel force have delivered it to the wrong delivery depot.

@Noo_Noo is understandably quiet, but his house is not.

Haven’t even opened it yet. Just finished work, grabbing some grub and then sort the little one for bed. Then I will get my moment.

Hopefully mine arrives today.
Apparently my acoustic has been sent out as well so that should be on it’s way as well.
